On June 22, 2013, AVS Forum member Ivan Pino (ivanpino) hosted a gathering of 25 members at his home in Los Angeles, CA. I was privileged to attend and hang out with many fine folks who share a passion for all things AV, including Home Theater senior editor Tom Norton and two fellows who drove all the way from Fresno.

Pino has built a dedicated theater at the back of his garage with acoustic treatments and two couches, the second one on a raised platform so everyone has good sightlines to the screen. A JVC DLA-RS25 projector fires onto a 110-inch Stewart StudioTek 100 screen, while the sound is provided by three Triad Gold speakers in the front, four Triad Silver speakers for the side and rear surrounds, and four Boston Acoustics subwoofers. A new lamp had been installed in the projector, and it had about 100 hours on it by Saturday, so AVS member Ray Coronado (Rayjr) did a full calibration in the morning, which early-bird attendees found highly educational. The result was a stunning picture that kept the theater full throughout the event.

The equipment is located outside the theater in an open rack, making it easy to manage the connections and swap components as needed. Movies are loaded onto two Netgear NAS drives, and the content is served by a Dune HD. Also in the rack are an Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player, Xbox 360 game console, DirecTV receiver, Marantz AV8003 pre/pro, Parasound Halo 51 5-channel power amp, two monoblock amps for the back surrounds, and a B&K AVR to power the subs.

Pino was the grillmaster, serving up burgers and bacon-wrapped hot dogs to the hungry throng. After lunch, I raffled off some AVS T-shirts and a couple of Dolby demo discs provided by Coronado. Even more important, I talked with several members who are interested in contributing content to AVS Forum, and I look forward to working with them.

A grand time was had by all, and I thank Ivan Pino and his family for their gracious hospitality!

Was the Triad Gold front stage Inroom Gold LCRs or Gold Monitors? How did the Triad Golds sound with movies in terms of dynamics and clarity?

I want to thank everyone who made this such a memorable meet. I hope to see everyone again soon. Ray thanks for such an informal class. Also thanks to Warren for again talking the long drive all the way from Arizona. And also Scott and Dan who drove down from Fresno.

Again thank you all and I will do this again next year. Maybe we can get the full 50 this time.

I'll eventually make it to one of these!!! Who's from the Fresno area? I'm in Visalia. It's pretty difficult to find any HT owners in this area. Specially any good places to audition HT equipment mad.gif

Seems like a lot of activity on the west coast lately. Pretty rowdy looking crew right there Scott.

Do you have any after pictures of the event? Why don't you tell us what's really going on?

Scott Wilkinson = Tyler Durden

Don't deny it... I'm not saying we have to talk about the Fight Club, just want to confirm who we need to approach to get in the club...

Thanks for the write-up and AVS hosting, Scott! A big thanks to Ivan and his family for hosting this event and cooking all the awesome food! Mmmmmmmm. Bacon wrapped hotdogs. smile.gif

I didn't get there til the early afternoon so I missed Ray's video calibration session. But I did get to meet a bunch of awesome people and had a great time. Ivan's system is pretty sweet and it was cool to see what kind of changes it's gone through since I last saw it about a year ago. I'll get you on them DIY 18's one day, Ivan. tongue.gif

Hope I can get one of them shirts next time. wink.gif For now, I'll enjoy the sweet sweet Dolby demo disc I got. Muuahahahahaha! biggrin.gif

That would be me! biggrin.gif Well, my friend Dan (Marafice Eye) and I. Long drive but worth it! There don't seem to be many central valley HT'ers. At least not that I've seen on this site or another. I know of one member here who lives in Fresno but I'm not sure how active he is.

Well, we should start our own Central Valley HT Chapter lol biggrin.gif I went from owning 7 motorcycles, and sold them all because the wife complaint I was never home. So, now my new hobby is HT....now the wife complains about the "Louse Noise" and how much money I'm spending....rolleyes.gif

It was a great event. And Ivan's theater sounds great. Even without the subs being on wink.gif With all his room treatments I think even a pair of cheap speakers could do the job.
