I'm afrraid I ditched the Polks! hehe. I found a deal for a pair of B&W 601s that I couldn't refuse. Sonic nirvana. Plus I upgraded my monitor when the price for a S. Korean 2560x1440 monitor went on sale; 20% off the $400 price, and man, it is incredible. Because it's an IPS panel, the colors pop and the view angle is great. The 1440p means that Skyrim graphics are razor sharp. So far, I haven't found a game that will make my GPU hiccup. I saw a video showing that my 680 FTW card will run Crysis 3 at 1440p and all the eye-candy at ultra. I don't have that game yet, but Crysis 2 with DX11 enabled and the eye-candy full blast was silky smooth gameplay.

Can you tell that I'm jazzed about the new monitor? hehehe

Hope your build is going well.

The Apple setup isn't good for gaming, so I just use a 360 controller for that.

Where did you get that steering wheel mount? That looks like a great solution!

Logitech K350 Keyboard and the mouse that it came with. The mouse sucks for twitch shooters like UT2004 because it looses it's tracking with fast/quick movement but for slower FPS'ers it's just fine (not to mention I prefer to play UT2004 at the desk with headphones with my MX518 mouse). I do want to get a good wireless high performance gaming mouse at some point. The range is good and the transmitter came with a USB extension so that the transmitter sits under my monitor screen with unrestricted line of sight to the keyboard and mouse. In fact, I just got up and walked 16ft away from the computer and the keyboard was still working good! Just walked completely into another room through a doorway about 25ft away and still was able to type this sentence! Anyhow, the steering wheel/pedal stand is a wheelstand pro http://www.wheelstandpro.us/servlet/StoreFront

This year, I decided to try PC gaming... let me just say this, I will never go back. PC has so many unique exclusives, and they also sell many, many, great games for less than 20 bucks! It's insane! I was so used to paying $60 for each and every game. Plus PC's are upgradable and ever evolving. Also, mouse and keyboard is where it's at.(coming from years of using controllers)
And as of yesterday, I am now gaming at 144hz. Makes a huge difference as well being able to go past 60 frames per second. If you love video/audio, and want the best gaming experience you can have, I suggest buying a PC. I sometimes just sit there and gawk over the beauty of the games..
Or if you'd still like the "console experience", wait for Steam to release their upcoming hardware. They'll have multiple different models at different price points running their SteamOS. So you'll still get upgradable hardware, and perform better than consoles, while still having that console feel.

Yes! I recently upgraded to a 2560x1440 monitor, and the night skies in Skyrim are so incredible I can do nothing except stand there in awe. While Fallout 3 proved disappointing, New Vegas is an entirely new experience now. I can actually tell what kind of enemy is coming while they're a long way away.

I have a question for the console players; can the XBox/PS play at the higher resolutions? I know they can scale up while in 1080p, but I'd think the FPS would suffer since the cards are not beefy enough to play at 1440p if they were in a PC. Just wondering if anyone has tried a console on a 4K TV and how that works.

Might be 'cause I'm too old, but I tried to play it, and it was much too tough for me. I am a total spaz, and if it were possible, I'd shoot my foot before I ever got a bead on an enemy. If there was a button that did it, while panicking, I'd press the button that forced my character to give his weapon to the enemy and then bow in front of them.

XBox 360 for me, with limited PC use for Blizzard titles. I used to be a hardcore PC gamer, and started with the original Wolfenstein 3D and Doom games. I got sick of spending beaucoup bucks on PC upgrades. Got a 360 a few months after the launch and have been all aboard since. I miss the PC controls for FPS games, but still like the ease of use of the console. Undecided as to if and when I will get an XBox One.

Platform I now play the PS3 (First Gen 60 GB Machine) ONLY. Sold the Xbox 360. I agree with the Microsoft greed comment I read earlier. However, the PC rocked with the Half Life series, F.E.A.R. was an awesome PC experience. And I can't forget CRYSIS at max graphics.

PC/Ps3/XBox360 all the way.
Don't know if I want to jump on the PS4 just yet-want to let Sony shake out all the growing pains first. Def will pass on the Xbone-M$ is all about the $-not the experience. Skimping on the HW was/is a fatal flaw for them, IMHO...

I've had the PS3 since launch and had the 360 almost just as long, but I haven't turned on the 360 in a looong time after getting Playstation Plus.  It's been hard to go back or find time for the 360 when I'm constantly getting another game to play on Plus.

I want a PS4, but that can wait till i either see more games or a price drop.

A fellow retiree in the same union saw my screen shots for Skyrim, and that convinced him to get a PS3. Then, he saw that I'd upgraded to a 1440p monitor and asked to come over and see how games looked on it. After witnessing his beloved Skyrim in 1440p with all the eye-candy on ultra, and then seeing Fallout: New Vegas for the first time, as well as Crysis 2 in DX11, he went right out and had a killer gaming PC built for him from a local PC shop, particularly when he saw what the mods I installed did for the games.

He's in hog heaven, though he is a bit disappointed to learn that his very expensive 65" plasma tv is still only 1080p. Oh well, at least his 780 card will handle anything he throws on that screen. hehehe.

I think the advantages of the expensive plasma TV likely make up for the loss in resolution. Games look unbelievable on my Panny. I cant wait to try Skyrim and Metro on the F8500 I just picked up. I also can't wait to game on a 4k OLED one day. Sitting 4 feet away from a 65 incher would be total emersion. biggrin.gif

I checked Wii, PS3 and PC but in reality the Wii gets very little use. The only thing I've really done with it lately is Wii fit and that's mostly because the weather's been terrible this winter and its been hard to get out and cycle as much as I'd like. I don't mind the cold (as its Florida and rarely too cold to cycle) but the rain nearly every day makes for a real mess.

I don't have nearly as much time to game as I'd like so I rarely get new releases. Mostly wait for games to hit the $20 - $40 range before I get them. The exception there has been the Gran Turismo games. Been a fan since the first. I'll usually get the Call of Duty games as they come out, but only because a few buddies of mine and I get together Wednesday night for dinner and come back to the house after for some split screen carnage.

Most of my PC gaming is done on my laptop simply because its the newest and fastest. Dell XPS L1702 i7 2670QM, 8GB Ram, 750 GB 7200 RPM Hdd, 1080p screen, Nvidia GT555 3GB video card, backlit keyboard, JBL 2.1 sound, Blu Ray burner, SB X-Fi. Had it for 2 years and it still plays what I want to play well. Different group of friends gets together Friday nights and we play. Mostly Starcraft II, but we used to play WoW regularly and I like the C&C series of games. My desktop is an old i5 760 with 8GB RAM and a GTX260 video card. I use it from time to time for gaming, but its mostly relegated to media nowadays. I run PlayOn on it and serve some other media to the GoogleTV in the living room. I've got a Samsung 24" 1080p monitor and a HP 22" 1680x1050 on it.

...I'm primarily a console gamer and own every console in the poll selection b/c each one has several games I like to play. I used to game on the PC as well (CoH/CoV and Age of Empires III), but haven't for years now. I'm interested in getting back into the PC gaming scene though after I build something I can actually game on.

We should co-op some Borderlands 2 or something similar. The videos would become viral at Fail.com in seconds! I've been a PC-only gamer since I learned about console commands and the corresponding cheat codes, not to mention the cheat mods in games like FO: NV and the likes.

If Bethesda wants me to pay full price for FAllout 4, they'd better leave that wonderful console in place, or at least make it cheat mod-able. hehehe. Besides being as inept as you describe, I'm also old and spazzy, with no twitch muscles left. If there was a button press for it, while panicking against a boss, I'd click the button that removes the weapon from my hand and gives it to the enemy, while my character would bow its head and wait for the merciful death it so richly deserved.

From time to time, honestly - over the years - I've had to borrow the neighbors, now 16 year old son, to get me through some boss levels that I just can't twitch fast enough for... (I find its been harder to hack the .ini & .config files to enable cheats, for a few years now ?? )
Mind you the kid runs over in a nano second to use my Feser One liquid cooled, absolute beast of a Quadfired O/C'd gamming rig...
(yes I'm proud of it biggrin.gif)
I gave him my loaded Xbox (used 2X) last year, with about 30 action HD-DVDs & 8 games, in exchange for some yard work

You're right. Not as many game engines allow console coding, though some of those have had hit-or-miss workarounds.
Heh. My second-oldest granddaughter comes over to game, but the oldest loves to watch movies on the 1440p monitor. I like a nice stable system, so I've always gone for good single-card setups. I'm really impressed with this EVGA 780 card. It runs everything I play smooth as silk and it the ACX cooler really does give a lot more room for OCing. It runs so cool that my stock card's Boost Clock speed matches the Super Clock's 993mhz. I have water-cooling as well, on an older 2600k CPU @4.2ghz. It's been at that OC for almost 3 years now.

It is nice to share some of our toys with others. heh.

I'm running a 1st gen I7 2.6Ghz CPU at 3.7 Ghz - should be 4Ghz+ but idiot store screwed up latency model of the matched RAM sticks (went 3g to 6G ), so I had to throttle back to 3.7Ghz - they BS'd me said special order no return!!
no difference in FPS due to the two Crossfire 2X cards running Quadfire takes up the slack. Gorgeous on a HP 24" 1920X1200 HD S-IPS monitor.
The Raptor 10K SATA 2 HD also helps a lot
I run two separate cooling loops with 3 rads each & 2 pumps, 1 for complete CPU & MB, & 1 for Quadfire GFX cards.
Had to mount & vent in a window for anything other than winter use - man they throw heat!!!

All worth it for quiet 5.1 THX gamming though smile.gif

I'd love to see Assassins Creed 4 on your rig. I was a bit shocked to learn that even a single GTX 780 ti would not run that game with all the eye-candy turned up. If the game patches work like many other instances, in about 2 to 3 months even my single 780 will run it full-tilt. I got the game with the purchase of the 780, and even with some shaders turned down, the game is gorgeous.

I got the game with the purchase of the 780, and even with some shaders turned down, the game is gorgeous.

Last rig build I just got fed up with the constant GFX card update, so I went full bore & did the WCing, Quadfire & ran a 64 bit Win7 Pro OS, 64 bit runs things better.
The Raptor HDD also made a HUGE difference.
Downside is when I upgrade, the waterblocks on the cards will have to be replaced & were VERY expensive EK Supreme full coverage ones (from Europe).
They cost almost as much as my GFX cards, by the time I got them at my door. DD were the only close competitors I didn't like them.
I used EK for my MB blocks as well.

The CPU & MB should survive for quite a while yet.

BTW - the original Crysis, effectively can't still be run full tilt, everything enabled, with anything that is even remotely affordable.

Yeah, Crysis is one game that defied the masses and threw the kitchen sink at the game engine. I bought Metro 2033 to see how well my 680FTW card ran it, and I was able to run that game full-tilt.

I will say that, just as the 680 was a pretty big jump from my old 580, this 780 has a lot more oomph than the 680, and does it at much, much lower temps. I haven't cracked 60c yet in-game, though ti is Winter. I expect to see maybe 3-5c difference in the Summer. In Skyrim, with the HD patches and extensive mods installed, teh 680 got about 85fps @1080p. This stock 780 runs Skyrim maxed at 130fps @1440p, and it was $60 cheaper than the 680, and $30 cheaper than the 580! I usually had the opposite curve apply to my PC component purchases, so it's a pleasant change of pace.

EDIT: I smoke like some crazed Chinese kid at a gaming parlor, so I usually change out GPUs every 12-18 months because, while I do due diligence to keep the case dust-free and clean-I even have used dryer sheets over the fan-side of the case-the smoke eventually gets to the chip itself, and temps start climbing. I am too spazzy to disassemble the card and clean it as thoroughly as it would need, and I have plenty of people that can use the old cards. My son takes them apart and re-applies the paste so that the cards will work for him for years.

Gads I wish I had GPU money like that! I am still running a 660. HA I suppose if I quit upgrading my TV every year it wouldn't be a problem...

Hmmm - I also smoke like a fiendish maniac when gaming!! *lights up a cig* or post on forums tongue.gif
I have a Bionaire with ionizer near my gaming station. biggrin.gif Never had any probs in 17+ years
One other nice thing about waterblocks is removing the fans & etc from the case.
It also gives the chance to properly mount all the hardware with proper & correctly applied better thermopaste.
I have seen some strange things lurking under stock GFX fans & heatsinks!! My Platinum 1950XTX must have had a spatula used !! eek.gif

When I open the window where the rads are mounted, in winter I get like 10c temps, smile.gif
I ran an aluminum flex duct from AC floor vent to rad enclosures for summer ~30c max when cards are full bore.

It is absolutely amazing what the extra load on cards is when the resolution increases.
Years ago most cards would not run resolutions at 1920X1200 & Widescreen resolutions.
I always used WS @ 1920X1200 & used to do the ini & .config hacks to enable it - which worked extremely well for most games.
Glad the game writers finally wised up to WS gaming - it even used to be illegal for matches online & off
EA held out for ages...

I have never bought a off the shelf PC I have always custom built them myself.

Yeah it's crazy how much that smoke gets in your gear. I figure most techies would have switched to e-cigs by now though!

i also have a kindle fire hdx to play some games. Some games (robocop) are good while others (injustice) play like crap. Great to watch hd video and play social media games and read books. Good battery life too. Better than my ipod touch 4g.

Hopefully I won't be upgrading the GPU for a while, so I can start upgrading the stereo components I have hooked up to the PC, particularly the subwoofer. I got a great deal on this Polk Audio PSW505 sub, and for $150 new, it's sounds okay, but I'm looking towards an SVS sub to replace it.

The only game that gave me trouble with 1440p is Morrowind, but since I have the Morrowind Overhaul mod collection installed, it was easy to fix, and now it too displays @1440p.

This is a S. Korean Crossover monitor. I got it on sale before x-mas for $319 delivered, and though I didn't pay extra for it, I got a perfect pixel screen. Not even one gray pixel. The colors a much more vibrant than my ASUS 24", and the one extra MS-from 5ms to 6ms response-is a non-issue. If you have a 680/7970ghz or better, I highly recommend upgrading to 1440p. My 680ftw card ran all my games smooth as silk. If it weren't for it dying on me, I might not have upgraded the GPU, but now I'm glad I did. Nothing wrong with more instead of less. heh

Well I guess smoking kills more that humans eh?

It will take a while for the latest GFX cards to be rendered useless - anyone who went with QuadFire or 4X, 6X Sli - will be in it for still at least a good few more years.

I suspect When Direct X 11 & beyond ONLY games are produced with no retro-patches - then "older" ones will be toast...
Tests done with PCI 3 vs PCI 2, doesn't even show much of a difference either.

I hope at some point that the GFX CPUS will ACTUALLY do the GFX work, rather than still relying so heavily on CPU use.
Essentially removing the FSB bridge to the RAM helped a lot, but still...
I use multiple demountable drives & my "game" drive is stripped down to run only bare OS essentials, so virtually nothing runs in the background - that also helps.

There is also so much "discussion" about 4K gaming on a monitor vs seating differences, due to the acuity limits of the human eye
- same issue as for 4K TVs in HT rooms - I follow the science
- sitting ~ 3 feet from the screen, is why I always bought the "Pro" series monitors which are 3 to 4 (or more) times the cost of a "normal" one - they are used in graphics & scientific labs, vs offices.
They also have/had a minimum 3-5 year warranty & a 0 dead pixel & at your door replacement policy, at least when I bought my lastest one 3-4 years ago.
See http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/646265-REG/HP_Hewlett_Packard_GV546A8_ABA_DreamColor_LP2480zx_24_Professional.html

My old equivalent one 12+ years old is still being used by my wife - she finally wanted a WS, so I had an excuse to freshen up!
