So, you're ready to tag.

Fantastic! Here's how to use the tools.

Table of Contents:

There are two ways of tagging a thread:

  1. The tagging box on the right hand sidebar.
  2. Power-tagging within a post, thread, or article.

Tag Box

You've probably seen this module in the right column, even if you weren't aware of what it did. This is your first tool for tagging up AVS!

It's really easy to use. Simply start typing a product name into the box.

You will see a dropdown list of “items” (hint: items = products). Once you spot the correct item for tagging, click on the “+” sign next to the item name and you will tag the thread. That's it!

Note that you can add multiple tags to a thread. A checkmark will appear on the left side of any tags already applied. Tag as many products (items), brands, and categories as are appropriate to each thread.

Always remember: Tagging is answering the question: "What is this thread about?"

Make a mistake?

To undo a tagging selection, simply click the “X” to the left side of the tag.

Power-tagging is a specific setting that makes it easy to tag as you read, just by selecting the text you want to search for, rather than having to type.

BUT! Power-tagging is a feature you must TURN ON before it will work.

Here's how. Just above the sidebar tagging box, you’ll see a link that reads “Select text to tag."

Click this and you will be greeted with a pop-up message. Select “Enable” - now you have the ability to call up the tagging tools anytime you're reading, just by selecting some text on the page.

Once you've enabled this setting, highlight any text in the thread which you think might match a tag in the site database. A small blue tag button will appear.

Click on the tag button, and the tagging tool will show up, automatically searching for whatever you highlighted.

If the text you highlighted isn't quite finding the thing you want to tag, you can always retype your search.

Adding an Item

Sometimes the product you want to tag doesn't exist yet in the site database.

Never fear! You can add it lickety-split!

When you're trying to tag, but the product you want doesn't come up, the “Add a new item” link at the bottom of the search results is your best friend.

To add the item you want to tag, follow these steps.

Click “Add a new item”.

A new tab will open with a pre-populated product list that are suggestions for which product you’re looking for and need to add.

When you find the correct item, click on it. You will be prompted to pick a category for the new item.

Once selected, hit “Save and Continue.” This will automatically import the product to the AVS Forum database, and bring you to its new product page.

Once there, select “Tag” in the upper right hand corner of the product page. This will give you a prompt message that the product name has been added to your computer’s clipboard (basically a convenient copy and paste), hit “OK.”

Go to the original thread/article tab where you were creating the item and paste the product name (that was just copied to your clipboard) in the tag window.

The new item will appear in the dropdown window, hit the “+” sign. You’ve just added an item/product to the site AND tagged said item to the thread.

Have questions?

Tagging on AVS is more structured than just typing in #hdtv or #lotrthehobbit but it's also more precise and more useful. It's also more difficult!

AVS Tag Team members should visit their special team forum with questions. If anyone else wants tagging information, just comment in this thread.

Many thanks!
