My system is technically 5.0 with dual subs. My speaker configuration on my receiver is "No subwoofer". I run the L/R signals to the subs and then the L/R speakers. That way, I use the subs for all material. not just discs with LFE channels.

I do the same another way - my filter takes both L/R and LFE input and ships to the subs. That way I also get LFE material that's been wrongly encoded up to higher frequencies sent to the fronts. Probably a unique feature of the filter I use, though...

My setup is 7.1 with 2 Sub woofers. Front LR are Klipsch LaScala (1978). Center channel is a Mirage MC2. Side Surrounds are Atlantic Technology 254 SR (1995). Rear Surrounds are Klipsch Synergy F2. 1st sub is a M&K MX100, can't remember what year I bought it, but it was many years ago. The other sub is a Velodyne DLS5000R. The AVR is a Pioneer Elite SC37. Using a Velodyne SMS-1 to keep the bass under control.

The LaScala's are toed in to the main listening position situated about 9ft from said listening position. The center channel is a foot off the floor below a 100" Black Onyx Draper screen on a sawed off speaker stand. The front of the center speaker is aligned with the front of the LaScalas. The side surrounds which are dipoles are just slightly behind the sitting position on the side walls approx. 6ft away. The rear surrounds are about 7ft behind the sitting position. They are a foot apart as per the THX recommendation. And about a foot and a half from the rear wall. The subs are on opposing sides of the room. One is facing the sitting position, close to the right surround speaker. The other sub is against the other side wall near the left front speaker. The subs are too tall to put under the Draper screen. I would have preferred to put them up front.

I just have the standard 7.1 system with my JBL Studio speakers that i've had for a long time. I did ditch the center channel and put in two JBL S26's on their sides angled outwards which fit perfectly underneath the bottom edge of my theater screen. Call me weird but it works. I have extra speakers in the shed for the future for front height channels if i ever upgrade my receiver or if it dies suddenly. Don't think i have any wall space for any other extra speakers.

Pioneer Elite SC-05
JBL Studio S310 fronts, JBL Studio S26II's mid and S36's rear.
Epik Sentinel subwoofer

I have a 7.1 configuration with back surrounds. I do have a question for the Scott and the forum. When you have two rows of seats, where do you place the left and right surrounds: on either side of the back row, either side of the front rowthe front row, or in between the two rows?

Good question, I don't have a good answer but since no one else has said anything....

Pick which seats will have the best sound and place the speakers for those seats. The rest will be compromised but will the patrons really notice? You will notice so pick your favorite seat and sit there, if someone else notices put them in the best row too.

Anyone else have some thoughts?

Thank you. This statement should be posted far and wide. And should also apply to those who use various EQ software and multiple subwoofers to make certain that everyone in the room gets a breathtaking experience. It just ain't gonna happen.

At the other end of the spectrum are systems that include only two speakers with or without a sub (2.1 or 2.0, respectively) or maybe three front speakers (left, center, right) and a sub (3.1). Some systems have front left/right and surround left/right (4.1), creating a "phantom center." And some folks, especially those with their main system in a small room, opt for a soundbar, which might or might not include a separate subwoofer. I assume that few if any AVS members use the TV's internal speakers, which typically sound dreadful, in their main system.

What is the speaker configuration in your main system? Some systems include more than one subwoofer, in which case, select the option that reflects the number of main speakers in your system. Lol. In doing all these polls I realized- what a clever way to get tons of brands named so google can crawl and advertise avs when someone searches for the gear we've all posted.

We do the best we can with the rooms we have and the seating layout we have. The only way for everybody to have the exact same sound is if everyone wore head phones. That said, in my theater, if you aren't in the sweet spot, I pour you the better wine !

Red face

Since I posted the original question (i.e. where do you position the left and right surrounds when there are two rows of seating), I want to thank everyone for their responses. I tend to agree that there's really only one sweet spot, but I'm likely to put the surrounds in between the front and back rows so that both rows get the benefit of the surrounds. That way, everyone gets the good wine.

it might just be the picture that makes it look small, its a 10ft screen it's about as big as it could go without going lower than the viewing positions (when i was testing it before the seats and screens were there i had it fill the entire front wall! damn that would have been good )

I'm running 5.1 Currently.

Technically I have heights hooked up as well but they're not timber matched to the rest of the system so I just leave them off as I think they don't add anything. Sadly I do not have the room layout necessary for 7.1 (couch is against back wall) so I don't see myself ever upgrading to a true 7.1 setup unless I move (Maybe 5.1.2 if Atmos takes off).

EDIT:

POLK RTI A9 X 2
POLK CSI A6
POKk FXI A4 X 2
SVS PB2000
ENERGY TAKE CLASSIC Satelites X 2 (heights......never on)

Currently researching a new receiver and looking into getting the upcoming uhd bluray player. I also want to get a 4K/UHD projector and 120" screen.

Altec Lancing A-7 Voice Of The Theater L & R Stereo
Polk Audio CS100 Center Channel
Advent Marble Surround Channels
HSU 15" Sub

Yes I know the CS100 Polk Center and the Advent Marbles need to go! Trying to fix my financial situation then budget my upgrades and improve my home theater.

Seems like I voted but never left a reply...

7.2 system with Aura Pro shakers in each of the four chairs so 7.6?

5.2 system consists of the B&W THX speaker package, LCR-FCM8's, LS/RS-PCM8's and he subs are PCS8's.

The back speakers are B&W LM-1's.

My theater is a converted bedroom, 12 x 13 x 7 with all speakers a standard array, considering the room size and accoustically treated with absorbtion, reflection and diffusion...and it kicks ass!

I love my B&W's!

5.1 setup, unfortunately no matching speaker brands/types which is mostly noticeable with my center speaker.
Have to fall in love with a nice setup, but i'm afraid of asking what it would cost to get a complete 5.1 config that i can nowadays listen to in a hifi store.

Suggest this 2014 thread be locked ASAP. That way it can preserve a "snapshot" of user's preference in real time. If it is locked now, a baseline in time can be established and the poll can be compared to other polls in subsequent years to indicate trends.

With a sample size of 1495 the poll shows 42% of AVS users have indicated they are running 5.1 compared to 35% running 7.1 setups. More than half have 5.1 or less in terms of speakers.

In the next poll more useful information could be gained if it were more specific about which speaker setup is used, living room, music room, computer room, bedroom, etc. That's because I would guess many AVS poll participants have multiple setups. That might even be a good poll question, "how many speaker setups do you have?"

The new poll should include Atmos, and a choice for the ubiquitous "Other." The poll would have more validity if it ran for a fixed period of time (3 months for instance) and then the thread was locked. Also, in the new poll thread, have a link to the old poll.

I'm not being critical, just trying to suggest some helpful tips that would make the poll even more informational in the future.

One of my next upgrades once I am working again will be to replace all 4 surrounds (Advent Marbles), with Bowers & Wilkins Series 686 S2 5" 2-Way Bookshelf Loudspeakers.
