that makes sense, this furniture does happen to be theater seats but they were only $70 for the three of them so not too big a factor.

The interesting thing to me so far in this poll is the indication that the majority of voters are in the $10k category. Makes me think the most active members are the ones most serious about this hobby. Maybe its too early to draw that conclusion though.

A rough guess (counting one major upgrade for the AVR and a second subwoofer) puts my gear (display, source devices, AVR, speakers and sub) at around 12000$ (perhaps up to 15000$ if we account for inflation). Fortunately, I have a generous wife (she's put in about 75% of that total).

Around $3500 for the current setup, not including furniture, where I spent at least another $1000-$1500. It's a modest setup, a 60" Sharp and an Onkyo 7.1 THX HTIB, but it's good for now. When I am able to buy a house, I am going to aim for about $10k. Hopefully 4K PJs will be under $4k by then, so that an a 7.2.4 Dobly Atmos setup should work nicely...

I'm a big believer in bargains… open box, last year's top of the line, craigslist, refurb, self-install, whatever... very few fail, and when they do, you've saved so much that you are still ahead. So, I'm firmly in the 5-10K range, but that includes 2 projectors (runco ls1 and benq w1080st), 7.1 inside (deftech RCS/RSS and SVS Sb13u), 5.0 backyard with a 120" fixed screen for the back yard, a 106" pull-up dalite HP for the living room, an LG 55LHX in the living room, anthem 510 AVR, panny bdt500 player, xb360, ps3, Apple TV2, sherwood r904n for separate source for backyard, did not include the movies in this total, but considering I'm including 2 complete theaters here (inside & out), I'll exclude that from my home theater total. Fun hobby… of course, my next purchase will probably double my total outlay (my 55LHX wants to go to the kids' playroom in favor of a 65"+ OLED… hopefully next year).

surprised to see so many over $10k… but not really.

Scott - any chance you could add more fine-grained categories? Such as, instead of $10,000-$50,000, make it $10-20K etc.

Hmm....just moved into new house so....let's just list what I've accumulated over the years so far that can go into the HT room:

Epson 6030ub
Da Lite 110" screen
Old Denon Avp-A1 that never got the dang upgrade! (Help anyone?)
Mark Levinson 433
Krell TAS
Nakamachi PA-1
Bolehnder Graebener fronts and center speakers
Citation dipoles
Velodyne 15" sub
Kimber kables for fronts and center
Wireworld cables for sides and rears

Most of these I didn't pay retail for...,I'm a cheapskate as well but do have the HT bug....don't wanna guess what I've spent so far cause I'll probably start crying...lol

I'll add Oppo 103d soon.....but beyond that I don't plan to add anymore....priorities shifting to kids now and all....

Now to find someone to help me get all this hooked up into my new house?!? Any recommendations in ATL area guys?

Yikes! Just did it in my head and came to ... oh.... about 6000. Then I thought about it and tallied the damage.

Here it is: 11,140 so far.

I put in actual money spent, not MSRP. Some I got at full cost (RC mini's) some at a great discount (Energy RC-50's).

So my selection needs to change. Amazing how you underestimate what you've bought. That's not counting media. I have about 200 blurays mostly bought at about $25 each, about 150 HD-DVDs at an average of 10 a piece, about 1000 MP3's bought at a dollar each (curse you Amazon), about thirty SACD's and DVD-A's at 25 each and lately lossless FLAC downloads at 20-60 each, seven right now.

Media is ballpark about 9000.

Jeez.

My $13k HT is made up of more than a dozen speakers that I've spent a decade collecting, and some other components that I have accumulated as open-box/sale items, etc. It also includes a $200 wine chiller that I bought brand new just so I could tear the insulated glass door off and mount it onto my wall-mounted equipment rack (to silence the fans in my equipment).

Adding all the costs up at once is a bit jolting, but consider this: I've spent over $9k on rock-bottom cell phone plans over the past decade (no data, no txting, excluding the cost of the phones). Spending ~1.5x that on my favorite passion does not seem so outrageous when put in this context.

It's all relative. My first room had a budget of about $3000 for room construction and equipment. I am 99% sure I stayed under budget. After 8 years I knew I wanted changes that upgrades couldn't fulfill. I spent more on my projector than I did on my entire first room. That said, I also saved more on my remodel than what I spent on my first room. Just on screen and projector alone I saved about 40% from retail and I still bought new, non-refurb items.

My view is it's not how much you invested in your current home theater - it's "how good" is your current home theater.

Should I include the $27,000 I spent to finish my basement? I did include some recessed, dimmable lighting and a special area for hone theater viewing.

Other than that, only the 64" F8500, a nice TV Bell'o stand I got a great deal on at Sears, and a Samsung HW-H550 soundbar; about $3500 total. The couch I'm using I already owned, and my PS4 was not purchased with home theater in mind.

It's still incredible viewing, better than I ever could have imagined having at home. I set the wireless subwoofer against the back of the couch so it vibrates it during loud sound effects. It's pretty cool.

Audio and video wise;
Around $23000 in CDN money

Marantz AV8801 > $4000
aperion Verus Grant (tower, center and four surronds with mount) + 14% taxes and duties > $4900
SVS PB13 Ultra x 2 > $4000
Outlaw powers amps
7700 $2150, once ship and duties $2750
2 2200 at $400 but once ship and duties $600 (each)
SMS-1 paid when it was $800 US (around $1000) and now use is it as a volume controler for 2 Buttkicker at $300 ea
JVC projector got it around $3100
Carada screen $1200
Balance cables for amp, pre-amp and sub and SMS-1 around $550
Speakers wires and connections (Banana plugs) $400

Room wise
Tables > over $400 got the the real movie reel to make them
Posters > one original from when Star Wars was re-lease (worth $150 then but the frame was $500)
carpet > $1200
Chairs > $2000 + an old couch
Movies decal $250
Outrigger for speaker look (3 set, mains and center speaker stand) > $500

Acoustic Threatment > $1000

Total around $30000 give or take a few hundred.

For me,
It took a LONG time to get there!
One piece a the time, then work on the next one.

Great thread by the way!

I'd be willing to be most everyone voting in this poll at first thought was either going to click one category less than what they spent, or did click one category less than what they spent. It adds up FAST over the years.

$2k on a projector every few years

I think most folks here, including myself, consider it an investment... an investment in happiness/enjoyment.

Had a bad day at work... kick off those shoes and head to the Man Cave.
GF/Wife nagging you to mow the lawn... mow the lawn, wash up, and head to the Man Cave.
Pissed because idiots with cell phones spoiled your enjoyment at the cinema... wait 30 days, buy the disc, and head to the Man Cave.

Existing finished basement with light control.

(about low budget as I can imagine )
More of a media room. 110" diagonal projection.

Gaming / Work Pc with capture might have upped it over 1000, but is what I used prior.
Acts as a server and feed off comcast or xbmc for tv or projector.

Projector still is portable but has a diy fabricated slide mount for easy swap.
Still existing bulb, will upgrade when it dies.

Acer projector 450
Used DTS Receiver 100
DIY screen 15
Left over Fabric Cloth border 0
20 plus years old speakers 300
Existing PC for streaming 0
Blu-Ray Player 50
Cables , etc. 50

Total 965

I voted $1-5K , I'm in the $3,300 range, but it could easily be in the $5-10K range. I bought both of my subs used which easily saved me $1000 plus. I bought my center channel used which saved me over $75 and I opted to go with brand new RTi series from the Polk eBay store for half the price than the newer corresponding RTi A series would have cost. And my reciever was a refurb. I opted also to go with a lower end dumb plasma so I could maximize my PQ/size:$$ ratio. I'm by no means done with my theater purchases but I'm on hold for a while until all the 4K and OBA formats are finalized and ironed out. Some laypeople think I'm nuts for spending what I did on what I have but I know that I saved on what I have and that the hobby could cost exponentially more. If you take your time and shop around this hobby doesn't have to cost a fortune to yield impressive results.

Panasonic P60U54
Marantz SR-7009
Polk Audio RTi8's, CSi5, RTi6's, OWM3's
SVSound PC12 Plus, PC Ultra (12")
Sony BDP-S7200
