Meet Up with Scott and Mark at CES 2015

If you're attending CES this year, meet up with Scott and Mark for a group photo and to discuss what's at the show.

Are you going to CES 2015? If so, let's meet up on Thursday, January 8, at 10 AM, so we can take a group photo that'll appear on the AVS homepage. The rendezvous point is under the International CES arch in the Grand Lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center. We'll be at the south end of the arch where it meets the outer wall of the Central Hall.

While we're there, we can go take a look at some of the newest display tech together. We'd love to hear your impressions of the latest TVs from the major manufacturers.

Later that day, you're welcome to join Mark in the high-end audio exhibits at the Venetian. If you are interested in attending audio demos as part of a small group, meet him there at 2 PM on Thursday, January 8, on the 29th floor next to the information desk.

Please RSVP in the comments of this thread if you plan to be there for either or both meetups. We look forward to seeing you!

Sorry too boring for me. After the vaporware hype/reporting of the last years, I'm not sure I'm even interested in what is shown there.

Was great meeting you Scott last year but just can't make this year see you in 2016!
I'll be checking for your video posts.

I'll likely be there for the 10am meetup, not sure if I will make it to 2pm.

Also! A tip for those going, I generally recommend parking at one of the casinos that offer shuttles that way you don't have to deal with the hassle of parking

I usually park at the MGM Grand.

The Sony press presentation is Monday January 5th at 5PM PST. It is being televised on the net and all can watch. The last several years these conferences have been close to worthless with no questions allowed from the press and seemed more aimed at the financial market to state how Sony is on the right track to financial well being yada yada and how confident Sony management is about that. Every year the path to financial wellness seems to change going from high end panels to cheap ones, from making inroads in the phone market with a phone no one ends up buying, and reducing the size of the company, the number of products it offers, and the number of people it employs. Innovation seems to be totally absent both in products and management strategies. Reduce labor costs and reduce services and the quality of those services. Be sure to watch Sony's dog and pony show even though there will be no dogs or ponies (CES show rules prohibit the use of live animals other than humans). Sony really could use a Mr. Ed.

I was planning to attend on Wed and Thur morning, but I just heard they deleted my badge from the system! I was on a guest registration with another company but they couldn't pay in time and lost their booth. They said the guest badges were still good though, but now CES just cancelled all of them. Anyone know of a guest badge I could use? I've already got flights and hotel paid for, not to mention the dog sitter.

Never mind. I got my badge rectified. I'll be there!
I'll try for the 10 am meet, but I'll be leaving by 2pm to return to Tucson.
Cool, I'm excited! Haven't been to CES in years.

HT wise, this meet up might be the most exciting thing HT wise at CES 2015.

BTW. ATI (Amplifier Technologies, Inc.) is presenting a movie, unknown title, in Atmos, for the viewing pleasure of up to 327 people on the first night of CES, Tuesday June 6 at 8:15 PM in Brenden Theater No 5 at the Palms Hotel, 4321 Flamingo Road. I received an invitation with the implication that one could bring guests. Given all the great things to do at night in Vegas, catching a movie in Atmos for free would not be on my priority list. But having my picture taken with Scott with me giving him a big hug and using that for my avatar would be . . . .

Questions I'd like to ask if I were going :

1) Atmos receivers, any that will support precise speaker position calibration? Aside from the Yamahas of course, which already has it (though how much better it sounds is unknown). Also which Atmos receivers will be firmware updatable to DTS: X. Make sure as AVSers that manufacturers know that customers don't want to buy vendor-lock in and have at least a little future proofing.

2) Dolby Vision HDR TVs and possibly even computer monitors will be shown at CES apparently. Tell us your impressions! Ask a lot of questions, like what is the native bit depth of the displays, the max brightness, price, ETA, etc.

3) Lower latency displays for gaming : Freesync will be making a big splash (and G-sync IPS monitors and TVs too). Can we get some info? And maybe nudge a few manufacturers to try and get Freesync added to HDMI 2.1 so that it won't be stuck in perpetual "niche feature" category.

How many guests? If only I had transportation to the Brenden theatres from The Plaza, I'd steal your invitation and take my Brother who lives only a block away! :-)

I am looking forward to seeing anything Atmos as well as the latest AVR tech before I upgrade.

I think the invite said 426 of my closest friends. Go to the ATI booth at the show (Look it up for location) and my guess you can get a ticket or two or whatever. ATI will be using its own processor and amps (Theta Digital, one of ATI's companies).

Selling off the show floor is prohibited by CEA show rules. Dealer orders are OK and some manufacturers offer their dealers some level of discount above normal for orders placed at the show or shortly thereafter. It is not a show designed for consumers or to help consumers. HT is a relatively small portion of the show.

I predict CES will be more exciting this year than the last quarter of the Oregon victory over Florida State in the college football semi finals. One would hope for some real news about 4k bluray but I doubt we will hear anything other than they are getting real close on a standard (which will not be disclosed to non members) and that there might be players and some content by next CES.
