HD Supply Glut on the Way?
Multichannel.com HD Newsletter
The number of HD sets on the market may exceed demand this year, but the price decreases that will follow could see 2005 actual sales exceed the Consumer Electronics Association’s estimate of 20.2 million digital set sales for the year.
That’s the conclusion of Norman Bardsley, director of display technology for market researcher DisplaySearch. He says manufacturing of sets is up 50% from last year, a major factor in what he says will be an unprecedented price decrease for large displays for at least the next year or two.
The price drop could give HD set sales some year-over-year growth. Big-screen HDTV receiver sales have been an up and down affair this year, with sales higher one week higher and down the next versus 2004 numbers.
Bardsley believes 32-inch flat-panel HDTVs for less than $1,000 this fall will be a common sight and those prices will continue to drop. The falling prices could result in more than half of U.S. homes having HD receivers by the end of 2006.
