I am looking for a very good universal remote control for my home theater. I don't need RF at the moment but will in the near future. I have an iPad if that is helpful. Thanks in advance.

There are lots of very good remotes in that price range. Any specific requirements to narrow it down a bit? Do you plan to program it yourself? Do you mind dedicating your iPad to your home theater and risk it being dropped, sat on, scratched or knocked off a table or chair?

I don't mind some basic programming, but I don't want to make it a second career. I like the concept of downloading the codes, so I was attracted to the Harmony 1100 but it was a real dog so I returned it. I am willing to dedicate my iPad to the theater if that's the best choice. thanks

How often do you change your equipment, in the HT room? If you don't foresee any upgrades in the next few years, a professionally installed URC or RTI/ProRemotes unit would be a good option.

Call a few local installers, get a ballpark price. Look for online reviews of specific URC RCs. Remotecentral.com might be a good forum to search.

I hate that iPad 'slide to unlock'.

Seriously? The OP's budget is ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

I'd look at URC's offerings such as the MX-980, MX-780, or MX-5000.

At $1000, you are in the neighborhood of an entry level automation system, such as Control4, which would start off as a universal remote for your theater. Then down the road you could add functions such as lighting control or security system integration. Just a thought.

imo, the urc mx-5000... i like wand remotes personally, and it has the best ergo of any remote i've ever touched (and i've touched them all )....

programming it isn't rocket science... all depends on how far you want to go with it... you can be basic, or you can take it to great lengths...

The MX-5000 is one sexy remote. I got the MX-980 right before the 5000 came out. While sitting at the URC booth at CEDIA, the guy immediately to my left and the guy immediately to my right each won a 5000. I got a keychain.

^^^

man, talk about poor luck...

yea, i had (still have, it's used in my secondary setup) a mx-980, and i really liked it... once i picked up the 5000 though, the 980 felt like a brick in my hand...

it's not cheap, but i look at it this way... it's something i use a lot, so ergo really matters... and you can do all kinds of things with the touchscreen if you are the type who likes to fiddle...
