Hi,

I have a fairly simple HT but my harmony seems to not work sometimes for reasons I can't imagine.

Also,... Some of my components have network connections and I love the Apps that are available for them.

So... I want to try to move to ios control.

Seems there are 20 apps.... How does one choose?

Hello Again,

Here's a effort to make the post more useful...

I have a Harmony 620 and my HT uses

Denon 1912 (Network control compat)
Sony S470 (Network control compat)
Macbook for lossless itunes audio (control with Apple's Remote app.)

And finally a Sony VW60 projector which I use with IR but it does have the option of HDMI control and also RS232 control.

My issue is I use a IR repeater because all the gear is located outside the HT and frequently the remote just does nothing. My guess is it's getting interference from the network hardware or macbook or .. ?

I have the Apps for the Denon and Sony BDP and I really like how reliable they are and also the 2 way feedback.

So... I really am looking for a ios type solution. I guess Roomie is the cheapest to buy into and if I don't manage to get it working well it's not that much of a loss.

I know irule and demopad are popular but from what I can tell it's more to pay initially.

I have Roomie and love it. They are constantly updating their program. Very easy to use.

May try that one, thanks.

So far, I can power up my projector automatically via HDMI control so that leaves only the Blu ray player and the AVR to control with the iphone or ipod.

One problem I have that's major is HDMI control doesn't turn off the projector so that's something I'll have to figure out.

Otherwise I'll need to invest in WF2IR or WF2SL or something.

I like the idea of using my iphone as a remote, but in most cases, I think it's more convenient to be able to do simple things by feel, like changing volume or pulling up a guide. I think it would be a pain to have to look down at a screen to do this.
I just got a URC R40, much better quality than the Harmony, easy to program using the remote itself with on-screen guidance.

Been working on this and found the reason my IR repeater was mal-functioning was it was too close to the cable modem.

So,.. I guess I'll "fix" my harmony weather I continue to use it or not.

I really like the ios apps because they have 2 way communication. Wonder if your AVR is in the right mode? ... the information is right there.

Looks like roomie doesn't support my projector's serial port control option but I may request it. They just added some projectors from JVC.

While I think total touch screen is nice, there are many disadvantages for me:

-don't want to share my iPhone and all of its data with guests who come over and may want to watch tv while either I'm there, or off in another room. All of my texts, email, Facebook account, financial data, etc, is there and don't want curious eyes to see it or perhaps see an incoming text for example. I also passcode lock which leads me to the next issue.

-to just change the volume, fast forward, bring up the guide I'd have to: look down at iPhone, swipe, enter passcode, find app, open app, then look at screen while performing the function. All that even just to mute the tv if a call comes in. Oh wait, I can't because I'd be using my iPhone to take the call! Too many steps to do basic functions. With a harmony one I just pick it up and hit mute. Done.

I think the only way this could work would be on an iPod touch that is your dedicated remote. No personal accounts on it so you don't have to worry about all your personal data for anyone to possibly see, and you don't need to passcode lock it. You still have to go through a few steps to perform simple actions though.

Hey,

I was thinking dedicated ipod touch as well.

Or maybe some other tablet ... ?? Android or so.

Anyways,... Roomie seems cheapest but I know I would need the Home Theater Pack and most likely the IR pack so it's the same price as the others.

That said... I looked at some videos of the others and it looks like very rough and unfinished stuff so maybe just waiting for a while may be the best option.

I'm thinking more about demopad now.... Looks much harder but much more customizable.

I'm really happy with iRule, running on several iPads and iPhones in the household.

I'm using RedEye with my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 and it works great. The RedEye Wi-Fi unit isn't cheap, but it charges the iPhone and the app is free. There's a RedEye app for Android and PC. The money spent for iRule, Demopad or Roomie apps plus the hardware would cost around the same as the RedEye unit and app.
