9:37 PM Customer:
no, its a control system that costs more than the TV.
9:38 PM Customer:
for a smart home
9:38 PM Customer:
but all universal remotes use hex code
9:38 PM Customer:
and I am just looking for the codes for this TV
9:39 PM Michael - (C5BG):
we are unable to provide support for remote controls designed by other manufacturers.
9:39 PM Michael - (C5BG):
Manufacturers may assign different code numbers in their universal remote controls to identify the Infrared (IR) signal of a Sony product.
9:39 PM Michael - (C5BG):
Thus, the code number used for operating a Sony product in one remote control may be different from that used by another.
9:40 PM Michael - (C5BG):
For information about programming a third-party remote control, contact the manufacturer of the remote control.
9:40 PM Customer:
well
9:41 PM Customer:
its not like a code
9:41 PM Customer:
A5
9:41 PM Customer:
or 55
9:41 PM Customer:
in the back of a manual
9:41 PM Customer:
its hex which is designated by the television manufacturer
9:41 PM Customer:
POWER ON,0000 0067 0000 000D 0060 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0018 0450

I had an almost identical conversation troubleshooting a Blu Ray player issue. I was so upset with the service I called customer service the next day. I tried explaining my issue was no longer the player that wasn't working but the total lack of technical support. They clearly never figured out why I was upset. I asked to talk to someone that actually understood the product and they referred me to the same line I called them to complain about. Banged my head on the wall, gave up, and cut my losses after that. It was clear another hour on the phone wouldn't accomplish anything.

I feel your pain. The folks manning the phones and online chat unfortunately have no technical expertise and no power or mechanism to provide any meaningful technical information besides what's scripted.

What model tv? Maybe I can find some codes you can try. Have you seen THIS? Sony often uses the same codes across many models. But I have seen reports that some newer sony's lack discretes altogether.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one frustrated by their technical support. I haven't seen that link, I will check it out and try this evening. The TV is the NSX-46GT1, the Sony Google TV. I was able to get discrete on/off to work and then next input. I had to build a bunch of variables to get the inputs to switch properly. Obviously, this isn't ideal.

Thanks for the feedback, it saved me an hour on the phone with customer service. What was your issue with the BDP?

Here are the known codes for that model that you can use to find some candidate discretes in the files I linked. If you had a JP1 remote, you could do a brute force code search. Do you have such a remote, perhaps an old cable tv, radio shack or one-for-all?

I don't know if this will help you out but I had a similar situation last week. I have a URC MX-450 in my bedroom and I tried all the codes for my new Sony TV but none of them would do discreet input commands. I was just about to give up when I remembered that I have a Harmony 890 in my main theater room. I added the Sony TV to the Harmony and used that to teach the discreet commands to the URC. If you have a Harmony lying around or know someone who has one you could borrow for an hour it may be worth a try.

Here was mine. Trying to figure out if the Sony 2800ES can convert HDMI audio to the zone 2 speaker terminals... I hear Denon can do this and the Sony is rumored to be able to, but couldn't confirm online.

I have a question about zone 2 on the Sony 2800es
11:56 PM Tyson - (C5DK):
Please go ahead.
11:57 PM Customer:
Will it convert digital sources such as the HDMI inputs to analog for zone 2?
11:57 PM Customer:
As in I plug an HDMI in from a source and I want it to play sound through the zone 2 speaker terminals
11:59 PM Tyson - (C5DK):
I understand that you own a Multi Channel AV Receiver , model#STRDA2800ES and you want to know if you are able to play digital music on it through HDMI. Is that right?
12:00 AM Customer:
no
12:00 AM Customer:
I want to know if the Sony will convert digital audio from an HDMI output and convert it to analog to play through the speaker terminals in zone 2
12:01 AM Tyson - (C5DK):
Alright.
12:02 AM Tyson - (C5DK):
This receiver incorporates Dolby Digital and Pro Logic Surround and the DTS Digital Surround

12:05 AM Customer:
What's your point?
12:05 AM Customer:
That statement has nothing to do with my question

You can play Digital sound on Zone 2.
12:15 AM Tyson - (C5DK):
Do you have the manual of the unit?
12:16 AM Customer:
Yes
12:16 AM Customer:
Digital sound from the HDMI inputs?
12:17 AM Customer:
Or only optical/coax?
12:17 AM Tyson - (C5DK):
HDMI is also playable. Just refer to page #75 on the manual.
12:17 AM Customer:
hdmi through zone 2
12:18 AM Tyson - (C5DK):
Yeah.
12:18 AM Tyson - (C5DK):
A detailed instruction is there on the topic under "Setting the Zone2 HDMI output".
12:19 AM Customer:
Yes but that's video from the HDMI output not the zone 2 audio
12:20 AM Customer:
I'll just figure this out on my own

LOL, that's a good one...

If I'm reading this correctly, you can only output analog through the Zone 2 Audio Out, but if you use the Zone 2 HDMI out it will play HDMI sources (weird).

My Yamaha will play HDMI sources in Zone 2 if the receiver is in "PARTY MODE" (both zones playing the same source simultaneously). You could try searching the manual to see if your Sony has a similar feature.

If you ever had a Sony Dash, or know anyone who has had a Sony Dash, you'll understand why I say that I wouldn't give my worst enemy's dog a Sony rubber bone.

I once tried to get the rs232 control codes for a Sony receiver (pre purchase). I even went past support and corresponded with the US executive staff.

After that experience I don't buy Sony products. ever.
