Ok so heres my dilemma ... I bought a 3 to 1 HDMI switch ... this one to be exact: http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-High-Performance-Switcher-Switch/dp/B0015YWKYY. The thing works great on its job of switching HDMI inputs at-least manually. I understand that certain devices have this "always on" crap that can effect these HDMI switches. Taking into consideration priority using inputs 1 through 3, 3 having least priority I plug my Apple TV into since that is one of these "always on" devices. Port number 2 I have my PS3. Finally port number 1 I have my 360. I put my DVR on a separate input on my TV as my TV only has 2 HDMI inputs and you can well see I have more devices that use HDMI than that. Hence why I bought the switch. Anyway the problem is with the PS3. I find it to be a very strange problem and I've been googling the crap out of it and have yet to find anyone with a similar issue. Normally the HDMI switch will stay on input # 3 since it's the Apple TV and its always on. Once I turn the PS3 on it will automatically switch to input #2 to display that. GREAT! Now this is where it begins to fail. Once I turn the PS3 off, the switch remains on input #2 with no signal message appearing on the TV. What? I can manually switch the HDMI switch back to input #3 for the ATV, but it never goes back on its own. I then can toggle between input #2 which is an off PS3 and input #3 the ATV. I normally can't do this until I turn on the PS3 atleast once without unplugging anything. Now here is where it gets really weird. If I unplug the PS3 HDMI after I turn it off, the switch will go back to the ATV. I plug the PS3 back in and it's back to normal. (Can't switch to it because it's off) I tried turning the power off, pulled the plug out of the PS3, no change still sees the PS3.
It's driving me nuts. I've tried using different ports. Different wires, even attached a 5V external power supply to the HDMI switch. All with the same result. The 360 on the other hand works like a charm, once powered down it releases it's port from the switch as it should and the HDMI switch goes to the next device in priority.
I can't figure out why unplugging the PS3 then plugging it back in makes any difference especially if I don't even have the PS3 plugged into the wall. It's like there is a switch inside the PS3 that once it's turned on it doesn't reopen unless the HDMI is unplugged or something. I can't make heads or tails of this.
Just wanted to update everyone I found a resolution. Use a different PS3! I had an older model (original I believe, it has the memory card slots and 4 usb ports on the front) and it works perfectly with the HDMI switch. Go figure though. Don't know if its a flaw with the other PS3 or maybe it's supposed to do that, but in this case older is better :-)
