Does anyone know if the Enter the Matrix game for Xbox is going to support 720p (or 1080i!)?

I'm seriously considering getting an Xbox just to be able to play this game in my HT! :D

(EDITED to change 720i to 720p...DUH)

Dude, you have got to be kidding! I have read everything I can get my hands on about Enter the Matrix and there has been not even a HINT that it might be HD.

I mean, I hope you're right. That would be awesome. But considering the game is coming out in less than a month you'd think that would be established by now.

Let me rephrase - we're done with the game.

I'm not kidding, not about this feature. I pushed long and hard, and it's in there.

Game streets May 15, 2003. Same day as the movie.

bw. Another Question. So this game has 720p and 1080i. Is it really more difficult to do 1080i than 720p.

bwiklem,

Thanks for the scoop!!! I have been waiting for an HD shooter. Based on your info I will pre-order Enter the Matrix.

The contempt with which the gaming community treats HDTV is frustrating. Heck, Microsoft's own Xbox website usually doesn't mention resolution on their HD games. They must think that all gamers are pimple faced 15 year olds playing on a 27" TV. Don't they realize that a lot of their best customers are affluent 30 somethings with fancy home theater set ups?

bwiklem, can you give a mini-review?
1. What games is ETM similar to?
2. Is the playability on the level of Halo?
3. What's the replay value?
4. Is the high resolution taken advantage of?
5. How big are the levels?
6. Can you roam around levels like GTA?

This is great news! Thanks!

Ah Chris, I can't give you that kind of info....it's very subjective, and I'd rather let the game speak for itself. Everyone has a different opinion. All I'll say is you'll get your moneys worth.

bwiklem,

I totally believe you, but I am astounded that Enter the Matrix is an HD title. Why hasn't this feature been talked up more? I would assume the marketing department at Shiny would want to get the word out how great Enter the Matrix is. True crime won't be out for many months and they are making a big deal out of that it's HD.

Yeah, I had been assuming that it wasn't going to be HD given how much I had searched for that information without being able to find it. This is great news as it gives me a great excuse (for myself anyway) to get an Xbox now! :D

I am sorry guys, but I must be the devil's advocate here. Maybe the Xbox has some magical components that make it do extrodinary things, but I am very very skeptical that any game that is not cell shaded or like Dragon Lair will run 1080i. Think about it, is there any game on the PC right now that will run at the resolution of 1920x1080 and will still run smooth on a GeForce3 card??! And we are not talking and old engine like HalfLife here. I assume Matrix will have T&L lighting, bump mapping, and descent polycount models. The GeForce3 chip has only SO MUCH POWER. It just seems very very improbable. Now 720p is a much more attainable setting and since Soul Caliber 2 is going to be 720p I could see how the Matrix game could easily be. I just won't be holding my breathe for 1080i games until Xbox2. Sorry guys, my opinion. But someone here tell me how a GeForce3 chipset can run such a high resolution with advanced shaders and mapping and keep a steady framerate!

I personally don't care if the game is in Hi Def or not. As long as it's a good quality game I'll be picking it up. However, in all honesty(no offense bwiklem) I'm not expecting it to be as most movie games aren't all that great. However, I hope I am wrong and it turns out to be something both fun and innovative. I know that the Wachawskis are big gamers and that they worked with the developers a lot, so I have more hopes for this game than any other game based on a movie. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Not only did they work with the game developers a lot, but they shot several HOURS of additional footage for the game using the real actors. The motion capture stuff was done with the real actors as well. Apparently, Niobe's script for the game was more involved than her script for the movie.

The way it's described, it also sounds as though you'll actually get more out of the movie if you also play the game. The example I've read is that in the movie a scene may start with someone walking through a door while in the game you'll actually see what happens to that character up until the point they go through the door. Really sounds quite impressive to me (for what that's worth coming from a non-gamer who may get an Xbox just for this game).

None taken, as I agree with you, most movie games aren't great (or even good). I think this one will turn some heads. But as stated previously, I'm not going to say much, would rather see what people think on their own without commentary affecting their opinion.

Still loved Batman on the Sega Genesis, great movie game.

That's one of the things that separates it from practically all movie games. It's not a game version of the exact movie you watched (with some other fluff to make it a game thrown in). It's a parallel story that intersects with the movie in key scenes. Those who watch the movie and play the game will have a greater understanding of the story and movie vs. the person that just plays the game or just watches the movie. And if you watched the "Final Flight of the Osiris" that was in theaters recently, where that story ends, the game story begins.

Hang in there, a few more weeks and you'll be able to check it out for yourself.

This is totaly different. 1920x1080 on a comp. monitor is TOTALY different than 1080i. 1920x1080 on a comp. monitor is 1080p a much higher resolution. 1080i and 720p both use about the same amount of data. There should be no reason a game can't do both 1080i and 720p.

VTBoy,

1080i is equivilant to 540x1920, 60 times a second. Thus 62,208,000 pixels a second.

720p = 27,648,000 pixels a second.

So 1080i requires over half the data as 720p. Considering the vast statistical difference it is amazing how similar they appear when viewed on an HDTV.

How this affects the quality of presentation on the Enter the Matrix game, I have no idea.

Chris you are wrong.

720p is 5529600 pixels a second.

720p is 720X1280@60p so thats 5529600 Pixels a second not 27648000

For some reason I was thinking 720p ran at 30fps. I guess I was wrong. Thank you for correcting me.

That's a pretty negligible difference when you do the math correctly!

Saying 1080i is the equivalent to 1920x540 is incorrect (although it is the same pixel count).

1080i is 1920x1080.
Rendering a game in 1920x540 will only produce 540 lines of resolution, 60 frames/sec.
Rendering a game at 1920x1080 will produce 1080 lines of resolution at 60 fields(of 540 lines)/sec.

The eye will still see 1080 lines at one given time, not 540, at 60 frames per second, not 30.

Comparing GC's or Xbox's 480i (640x480 based) to PS2's 480i (640x240) is a joke, even though both are sending the same amount of pixels.

bwiklem, do you know what source resolution the game will be running 1080i from? 1920x540 or 1920x1080?

I do, but I'm waiting until the game ships because I want to see what people think looks better (those that have a 720p and 1080i capable display). I don't want to color anyones opinion nor have anyone over analyze it until they've played and seen it.

Resolution aside, I have one question that's been nagging me through the whole thread...

What if the movie frickin' sucks?!?!?

The original was so awesome, and IMHO a complete story, plus tons a Christian allegory that will be hard to resolve in a sequel... I just keep thinking "Highlander II" and a chill runs down my spine.

If the movie sucks, I would think the game would just be torture to play... whether in 480p, 720p or 1080i!

Well... Here's to hoping it doesn't suck. There's at least one AVS member's career at stake! ;)

How dare you speak of such a possibility!

But seriously, I (optimistically, perhaps) think this is very unlikely. The way I see it, this was intended to be a trilogy from the beginning...we basically just got to see the first third of the story in the first movie. Surely they didn't have a story in their heads that was great for the first third but then sucks beyond that.

Oh, I'll be so pissed if the movie isn't AMAZING!

Well, this is what I was afraid of. This is a quote from IGN after getting some hands on time with a preview build of the game:

"In the end, Enter the Matrix is designed to be like an interactive action movie. In doing so, it does a fair job thus far (we only have a preview build). It features some cool effects, many of which have been seen before, and it adds its own take on the Bullet Time action genre (wait, is that even a genre?). Given the amount of hype it's been given, Enter the Matrix is difficult to judge. The pressure for this game to come close to the ultimate in coolness will eventually work against it. But if you just played it as an action game, you might have some decent fun. My best advice for those who want to play -- and enjoy -- the game? You should tune out all Matrix hype as soon possible, and prepare for an average game come this May."

I know that this is only a preview and I definitely plan on reading tons of reviews on this game when it comes out as things may have changed. But if not and it is only a so so game, then I don't plan on wasting my money on it as there are just too many other great games out there.

Again, I don't mean any disrespect bwiklem, as it seems that you guys did do a good job on the game. But, movie games are difficult to do as you're sort of limited to what the movie does. Hopefully some things will change once the final build comes out and maybe I'll eat my own words. We'll see...

dschroll,

I couldn't find that quote from IGN you posted. I read the IGN preview and it seemed very positive. This is how they summed it up:

"In the end, Enter The Matrix looks to offer gamers some of the most impressive production values seen in a videogame-movie collaboration ever. That's a big statement, but the game, however, looks to be mostly aimed at casual players and truly diehard fans of the fiction. If gameplay manages to live up to the standards set by the title's outstanding production levels, then we're all in for a really good treat. If Shiny can pull this off, it'll be one of the biggest success stories in a long while."

The only way to find out is just get it and play the darn thing. The Warkowski brothers have a huge amount of credibility with me. I like everything they've ever had their hand in. Based on that, I have preordered the game. Sure, it might suck, but I'm willing to bet 50 bucks that it is a great game.

Hey Chris....are you an Insider as the article I read is only made available to insiders. Here is the link for it:

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/400/400020p1.html

I'm not really saying anything at this point as to what the game will be like. I'll wait for the reviews to come out before I decide to buy it or not. Even though I do enjoy the Wachowski's movies, I'm not ready to take that leap of faith that they'll know how to make a great game. While I don't doubt that the Matrix game will be one of the betther movie based games out there, I'm almost willing to bet it will merely be an average game compared to other games out there. I'm not big on spending $50 to play an average game.

We'll see in the next few weeks once the game gets released along with the reviews of it. It may turn out to be great and it may turn out to be crap. Whichever the case, I'm definintiely doing the wait and see approach. I don't feel the need to preorder it as if it turns out to be great I'm sure I'll be able to get my hands on a copy. Hope you like it though Chris......you'll have to give us your thoughts on it once you get it.
