I just thought I should let you guys know that my new sammy dlp 5085 Kirk displays halo 2 and the other games I was having trouble seeing (too dark) much better. The game looks great on this set. Contrast, sharpness and very smooth. I couldn't accept the fact that any new hdtv was going to look poor not while I was using componet cables for a progressive signal. I can't wait to get my computer hooked up but for now I think I'll enjoy my xbox. I'll be glad to post some pictures if you guys want. Thanks for all your help.

Please show some pictures! I have a calibrated Sammy DLP, HLN series, and it is absolutely frustrating playing dark games on it through not only my Xbox, but all other consoles as well. This is especially frustrating on my favorite genre of video games, horror/thriller adventures like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame. The TV doesn't really upset me as much as a game with no brightness/gamma control like Halo 2 as most RPTVs and FPTVs don't have black levels like CRT displays.

When I had my Toshiba 34HDX82 tube ISF calibrated , the guy pointed out that every input had to be separetely calibrated. The brightness settings were totally different out of the box for the DVI and component. My gaming was initally really dark, now it's fine. Could this be your problem? I also have seperate picutre settings for sports/movie/tv/custom and with sports the default is 100% brightness while it is 50-70% on others. He moved the entire brightness range over about 30% so 100% now is like 130% would have been before.

I can't seem to get the true sharpness of what you actually see, its almost computer like and yes I have a nice setup in the next room ATI 9800 with doom3 and hl2. I'm not saying its as good but I think it approaches the quality of my computer. On games the use 720p or 1080i I think they look just as good. When I get the time I'll take shots of the same game on the computer against the same game on the xbox and let you see what I'm seeing.

How do you do the "still" thing with the xbox?

I would like to post some pics but can't seem to figure out how to still the action.

Ahhhh, thanks Kevin.

I once tried to take pictures while playing "Live", needless to say, that didn't do too much for my kill to death ratio, in fact, it lowered it substantially.

I'll try again.
