Pros Cons
  • Excellent opportunity for sound
  • Average video, DLNA and Internet performance
From a two-year period of evaluation, I like to provide some feedback on the list of features, advertized by Oppo, the following rational conclusions are made:

Diversified Media Support:
Blu-ray Disc – Works as advertised without flaws
Blu-ray 3D - Some disks seem to require the 3D Mode setting Forced in order for the display to properly show 3d image
SACD – Multi-Channel priority and DSD output setting to SACD of DSD then the player is working as an analog passthrough. It will go straight to analog without any conversion or processing. For my 4.0 setup, I have negotiated a solution where the 7.1-Channel Analogue Output board is replaced by 3rd party hardware.
DVD-Audio - Works as advertised without flaws including the processing the speaker configuration. For my 4.0 setup, comments on SACD above applies.
Netflix Instant Streaming Ready – Delivers the message “This device cannot instantly stream from Netflix in your area. Visit Netflix.com/NRD to see a full list of devices that instantly stream from Netflix”
YouTube Leanback - Works without national character set and with a tediously slow and very basic graphical user interface such as no remote control app keyboard search facility, to say the least.
Comprehensive Internet Streaming - Works with a very basic graphical user interface such as no search facility, to say the least.
BD-Live & BonusVIEW – works but are rarely used by movie producers nowadays.
Additional Disc & Media Formats - Works as advertised without flaws for those formats yet tried.

Unparalleled Video Quality:
Qdeo by Marvell – Colors are muted when selecting the player HDMI option Color Spaces YCbCr4:2:2, YCbCr4:4:4 and Auto. Colors are clear only when selecting the Color Space RGB Video Level “The HDMI output uses RGB color space and normal signal range suitable for video displays". For this test, the Spears & Munsil High Definition Benchmark, Chroma Multiburst pattern is used. Oppo Support has “confirmed that when testing the Color Space characteristics of the player when using HDMI 1 and HDMI 2, both outputs on the player produce proper Color Space conversion to a display which properly accepts these Color Spaces. This keeps the issue open for the projector display vendor, Epson to resolve.
DVD Up-Conversion – Works as advertised without flaws
Full HD 1080p Output - Works as advertised without flaws
True 24p™ Video – Works as advertised without flaws
Source Direct Mode – Comment from Full HD 1080p Output above applies
Multiple Zoom Modes - Works as advertised without flaws
Vertical Stretch Mode – Not applicable
Dual HDMI v1.4a Outputs – Oppo recommend to use HDMI 1 since it benefits from the dedicated Marvell QDEO video processor, and set the “Primary Output”. The HDMI 1 output resolution of the player's default state (1080p/50Hz - PAL- or 1080p/60Hz - NTSC), according to Oppo support - “Unfortunately due to the output resolution of the player's default state (1080p/50Hz - PAL- or 1080p/60Hz - NTSC) and your source material being 1080p/30Hz, the player will handshake a new HDMI signal whenever the player switches to and from your source material when using HDMI 1.
Advanced Picture Control – Not applicable since all controls are handled by the projector display. Comment from Full HD 1080p Output above applies
High Fidelity Audio:
Dolby® TrueHD - Works as advertised without flaws
DTS-HD Master Audio - Works as advertised without flaws
7.1-Channel Analogue Output- Works flawlessly. For my 4.0 setup, comments on SACD above applies.
Digital Optical and Coaxial Outputs – Not applicable
Rigid Chassis Construction – Nice external design, color options a’la Henry Ford

Ultimate Convenience:
Dual HDMI Outputs – Comments from Dual HDMI v1.4a Outputs above applies
Wireless & Ethernet – According to the Oppo support, “The player will work with Wireless N 2.4GHz wireless networks. The only performance you would get from a newer router would be higher reception and transmission capabilities of a router. But the player can't use an alternative adapter as they need to be designed for the player.
Dual USB Ports – Works as advertised without flaws
eSATA Port – Works as advertised without flaws
PAL/NTSC Conversion – Works as advertised without flaws
Back-lit Remote Control – Not applicable. In my multi-vendor setup, a unsiversal remote control is used.
Universal Power Supply – Works as advertised without flaws at different regional voltage levels
External IR - Not applicable
RS232 Control - Not applicable
Remote Control Apps – Works as advertised without flaws
HDMI CEC – Not Applicable
DLNA Certified - Works as advertised without flaws, however with a very basic graphical user interface such as no search facility. Not a thumbs-image user-friendly design a’la Apple TV, Synology DSphoto or similar DLNA client to say the least. When playing HD 60P MP4 videos there are performance issues, where the picture and sound comes in bursts with a second-long intervals, regardless of the network setup or NAS server used.

Remarks
The Oppo support has been very helpful to resolve how some issues should be categorized where full reports are available.
The list obviously is limited to the features available to european customers who are excluded from many of the services from US media service providers.

Verdict
World class – SACD, DVD-Audio, Dolby® TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio with 7.1-Channel Analogue Output board replaced by Vanity93 from audiopraise.com, eSATA Port.

Average industry practice - Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray 3D, BD-Live & BonusVIEW, Additional Disc & Media Formats, DVD Up-Conversion, Full HD 1080p Output, Multiple Zoom Modes, True 24p™ Video, Rigid Chassis Construction, Wireless & Ethernet, Dual USB Ports, PAL/NTSC Conversion, Back-lit Remote Control, Remote Control Apps, DLNA Certified

Useless - YouTube Leanback, Comprehensive Internet Streaming

Not working - Netflix Instant Streaming Ready and other services from US media service providers, Source Direct Mode, Dual HDMI v1.4a Outputs, Dual HDMI Outputs

Not applied - Qdeo by Marvell, Vertical Stretch Mode, Advanced Picture Control, External IR, RS232 Control, HDMI CEC
Daily usage - The BDP-93 works as a universal transport of all available disk media formats and local eSata disk or DLNA streams providing world class sound and average image with a limited user-friendliness.
