Pros Cons
  • Great looks, great sound, very easy to set up, 3 year warranty
  • Price, remote is not backlit, no Audyssey XT32
I am familiar with Marantz as I had a SR5005 for two years. Great sounding piece but it was missing the modern features that I wanted. I sold the SR5005 and bought a Yamaha RX-V673. It had all the features I wanted but it was such a step down in sound quality that I only kept it for 7 weeks. So I sold the Yamaha and was looking at last year's SR6007 or the Denon AVR-3313CI. I went to my dealer to see if they had any deals on open box SR6007 but they didn't have any. Instead, they offered me the SR6008 for a great deal.

First, like the last 3 generations of the Marantz receivers, the 6008 is a beautiful looking piece of gear. Some people complain about the small porthole display but I don't mind it. All you have to do is press info on the remote and you see all the info you need to know.
The one disappointing thing is that the remote is not back-lit like the remote of the 5005 was.

This is a 7.2 receiver with all the HD Audio formats, 6 HDMI inputs, 2 HDMI outputs (one is ARC). It has Audyssey MultiEQ XT room correction software. Multi-room capability. Two zone and it does HDMI out in zone 2 which is a big plus.

There is plenty of inputs in the back for you to connect a ton of gear. So far I only use 3 HDMI ports. I have a HTPC, cable box, and an Xbox 360 hooked up to it. Marantz did a really nice thing by giving us a label sheet which has labels for all connections. You no longer need to think which wire is what should you decide to connect or disconnect anything from the receiver.

Setup was super easy. I set it up manually because right now I only have a 2.0 speaker system. The remote and the UI are well designed and very easy to use.

Now on to the network features. I tried Pandora and it works great. Also I streamed music from my NAS through the server network feature with no problem. Everything works beautifully. AirPlay works great too, even if the receiver is off. You can start a song play and tell your iOS device to play through the 6008 (it is detected even when receiver is off) and the receiver will automatically turn on and start playing the song you told it to. Very cool. I did not try the other network features because right now they are of no use to me.

The sound is awesome. Some people say that Marantz has a warmer sound but to me they sound pretty neutral. Right now I am playing everything in pure direct mode. I am very impressed with the sound. My speakers are Dynadio Contour S1.4. They are 4 ohm speakers but the receiver drives them with authority. It put Yamaha to shame but then again the Yamaha had a MSRP of $600 and the 6008 retails for double that.

Overall, this is a great receiver and I highly recommend it if you are a music lover first like I am. If the receiver is within your budget, buy it!. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
