Pros Cons
  • superb sound quality, easy to setup, easy to use.
  • limited hdmi inputs, no on-board amps for 7.1,
this is a different kind of home theater receiver.

most modern avrs are long on all manner of useless gimmickry and short on what really matters -performance.
not the rotel.

this is an audiophile's avr with emphasis on performance.

it has all the basics - hd inputs and audio decoding plus a full suite of legacy inputs - including upscaling of analogue video to hdmi.
all wrapped up in a functional, well-built single box.

there are absolutely no bells and whistles - praise be !

setup is via an old school ms-dos style black and white onscreen menu.
not pretty but easy to navigate and setup.

compared to other avrs, the rotel's performance is a revelation.
this is a unit that will not be embarrassed in systems of the finest audio and video components.
the sound is powerful and realistic on both movies and music.
video quality is excellent from the onboard faroudja circuitry.
it faithfully reproduces whatever is fed into it with no editorializing.

don't be put off by the measly power rating of 75wpc, these are real watts, with all channels driven (most avrs won't get near their rated power when all channels are driven).
it's backed a by a huge power supply with enough reserves to drive the difficult electrical loads presented by high end loudspeakers.

it's not perfect though.
many users will miss the fluffy stuff like a zillion hdmi inputs and multiple outputs, auto setup procedures that do everything but produce decent sound, and forget about wifi and all that networking/streaming guff.
iphone hookup ?
what's an iphone, lol

and some aspects of operation are not as polished as the big ht names.
switching sources can result in audio lag, updating the firmware is a hugs pia - it involves hooking up a pc.

value largely depends on the eye of the beholder.
those who put functionality over form will love it.
your typical ht fan who loves the gizmos will probably hate it.
