Looking forward to this new original on Showtime. Theme song they play on some of the promos (The Girl I'll Never Have) gets stuck in my head for days. Hope it's as good as the promos make it out to be.

My God! Here we are in the Californication thread STILL arguing about JfC. I am amazed by the strong feelings about JfC, both pro and con, that persist even now, although the show is kaput. If Milch knew, he would be laughing his ass off.

I think that Californication is delightful. David Duchovny is the perfect actor in the perfect part.

The writing is intriguing, but so far the two problems still exist for me:

1. This poor bastard is having hot ass thrown at him in all directions, constantly. It's just impossible for the viewer to feel sorry for his character. Sure he's twisted and tormented over losing the relationship with the mother of his child, but having gorgeous women beg you to bang them certainly takes the edge off

2. This supposed 'great writer' isn't. Go back and listen to what he put as his first blog entry. Absolute terrible cliched crap. It reminds me of the people who used to criticize that the 'skits' we briefly saw on 'Studio 60' weren't that funny and this show is supposed to be a huge hit. Everyone used to say, the show isn't about the 'show within the show' but rather everything else around it. Well I'm sure the same is true about Californication, but if you're going to subject us to his genius, then you'd better make it damn good or the whole premise goes away.

I like this show a lot, but it's hard to know how it's going to develop into something more than titillation. For a comedy series to achieve greatness there has to be meaningful conflict or psychological complexity or angst - gotta be more than yuks and teats. You've got to care about what happens to the main character, which means that you have to make him or her real. If this series doesn't develop any more depth, I'll keep watching for the primo T&A, but I'll lose respect for myself.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Yeah. Definitely looks like some CGI, prosthetics, or special effect trickery was used on Paula's topless scene. I looked at HD footage frame by frame and it indeed looks "off".

Disgusting. Sometimes computers can be the devil.

So, arch, if JfC tanks, will "Deadwood" get any more eps?

Well, I think that was the assumption everybody was going on, but now I hear that Milch has "other projects" in the works including a return to his cop-show roots. Could be that even if he wanted to (not a given with the mercurial Milch), HBO would view starting 'Deadwood' back up as prohibitively expensive, or logistically unfeasible. On the other hand, during the summer press tour, I believe they said it was "doable". So.......uh.......I don't know Butchie instead.

sorry, which one was Paula Marshall? Or, put another way, which ones were Paula's?

I remember Paula Marshall from Out of Practice. I don't remember seeing her in ep 1 or 2 of CAication.

Lets drop the JFC crap? That loser isnt even on SHowtime.

In an earlier post I observed that the passion of the responses JfC continues to draw, both pro and con, is a wonder to behold. I rest my case.

Somehow I am not worried that I dont feel sympathy for the main character. I cant believe that is the intent. The show so far is just very funny!!

I don’t feel much sympathy for him, either. The show’s magic, it seems to me lies in the really funny and creative messes this interesting, charismatic guy’s libido gets him into. His writer’s block and slacker’ attitude make the whole thing even funnier but the guy himself is, to put it gently, not very admirable..

This guy get more ass than a toilet seat. If only I had porn stars throwing their phone number at me while at a stoplight! (not really, the porn star part anyway, but you get my point)

Ladies: Is DD really that attractive?

I like the show so far and the BF (boob factor) is much appreciated.

BTW, I liked JfC also and wish it had been renewed for a second season. THEN we would have gotten some answers! JK.

No CGI needed for Brooke.
Although for some reason I think this will be here "peak" as the type of role she'll land in "mainstream" TV/movies. I can only think of one porn star that did a half way decent job in "mainstream" media and that was Traci Lords.

And I second the motion of no more JFC/Milch talk - wrong channel and show.

Another "eh" episode for me. The main character is just a little to smarmy for me so far. We'll see if that changes. It does have moments that really made me laugh (like the puking on the picture in the bedroom), but the character just seems non-likable for me so far. I'll keep watching for now though ..

hey I think in L.A. if you're a good looking guy and drive around in a Porsche convertible, that will happen eventually.

Being neither good looking nor Porsche driving, I cannot attest to this, but it's on TV, so it must be true.

Temptation: Music from Showtime Series Californication Track Packs Revolutionary New Release Paradigm from Abkco via iTunes

Music heard in the hit Showtime television series Californication will be available through iTunes as the series evolves. Groupings of eight songs, known as "track packs" will be avilable after every four new episodes. Initial track pack includes classic music from the Rolling Stones as well as never before released tracks from new artists. It's exciting that viewers will be exposed to artists and music through the show that they wouldn't otherwise know; it's not about who's on a major label but about the music, whatever its origin; listeners want quality and our aim is to fill that demand.

New York, NY (Billboard Publicity Wire) August 25, 2007 -- Californication, Showtime Networks' critically acclaimed new comedy series starring David Duchovny opens an express lane on the digital music super highway next month with the release of the first of three 8-song "track packs." Titled Temptation: Music from the Showtime Series Californication, it will be released by Abkco Records exclusively via iTunes ( www.itunes.com ). The show, the highest debuting scripted comedy series in Showtime history, is rife with contemporary and classic music that underscores its edgy, iconoclastic tone. New episodes of Californication air on Mondays at 10:30pm ET/PT on Showtime.

Music supervisors of the television series Californication Budd Carr and Nora Felder found a kindred spirit in Abkco Vice President Alisa Coleman when they approached her about licensing some source material for the show. Carr, Felder and Coleman discussed the desirability of offering soundtrack music in a more immediate context than traditional albums which are usually released at the conclusion of a series' first season. "We wanted to do something new with soundtracks," Carr notes. He adds, "When Alisa cited Abkco's strong ongoing relationship with iTunes, it seemed like we had the means at hand to provide viewers with an 'evolving soundtrack,'" Carr's term for the aspect of this project where just-heard music is made available to consumers on a regularly scheduled basis -- sometimes even in advance of that music having been heard in the latest episode of the series.

Expressing her great enthusiasm for the revolutionary concept, Coleman comments, "The idea for the evolving soundtrack package in conjunction with a popular television program -- Californication -- encourages and facilitates formerly passive viewers to become active consumers while, at the same time, bringing them closer to their favorite show and its unique music soundtrack."

The first "track pack" of eight songs, reflecting the music of the show's first four episodes, will be available September 10. The initial offering includes a broad spectrum of music ranging from classic rock to new, cutting edge material. These include a Paul Oakenfold remix of The Doors' "LA Woman," that has never before been available digitally, a track from Mike (Faith No More) Patton's Peeping Tom project, one from Tommy Stinson of Replacements renown, a rare Elton John cover by My Morning Jacket, a Rolling Stones classic, a track from Americana sensation Mindy Smith, a song from London-based popsters Arco and a track by straight ahead young rockers Josh Blake and The Country Gentleman never before released. As a value added bonus to kick off the program, the original Californication television series trailer is being added to the initial release available from iTunes.

Two more Temptation: Music from the Showtime Series Californication "track packs" will follow the initial offering, available after every four new Californication television episodes. At the conclusion of the series' first season, all three collections will be available. Each "track pack" will be offered at $7.92 with the three sets, totaling 24 tracks, available at $23.76. Showtime also offers a video podcast on iTunes, which contains behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and producers from the show.

Offering the label perspective is Iris Keitel, Abkco Senior Vice President, "We fully realize that fresh thinking is what's called for in today's quickly evolving music industry and our friends and partners at Showtime clearly concur. We're delighted to have this high-profile opportunity to work with them in offering the music heard on the television series in such a ground-breaking and innovative manner. Our combined approach is both direct and immediate and we're confident consumers will be delighted as a result.

Californication series creator Tom Kapinos is passionate about the idea, commenting, "An episodic soundtrack enables us to establish a musical arc for the show. We're delighted that viewers who want to extend the show's experience can now do so via iTunes."

"We're all looking for music that speaks for and stands behind the show's characters," says Nora Felder who shares music supervising duties with Carr. "It's exciting that viewers will be exposed to artists and music through the show that they wouldn't otherwise know; it's not about who's on a major label but about the music, whatever its origin; listeners want quality and our aim is to fill that demand."
