**The update is set for some hardware HDMI handshaking problems, BD disc audio format display problems**

**GUI rolling word speed up ...**

**The best environment for update is using wired LAN cable hooked with AVP.**

**Make sure the ISP you are using can pass all the data from Denon server .**

**It will freeze the AVP if the update cannot complete.**

I was given permission by The President/Owner of Audioholics (Gene DellaSala) to post a re-print of a comprehensive information page about the firmware updates he has on the Audioholics website. Thank you to Gene for allowing me to share this most helpful information here on our thread.

Also Gene has started a Denon AVP-A1HDCI / POA-A1HDCI Review Support Thread . Gene will be supporting this product there and has direct contact with Denon to answer any questions. This is an excellent companion site for our AVP/POA owners thread.

Denon AVP-A1HDCI & AVR-5308CI Firmware Update

*Anyone considering this update should proceed with caution as some AVP owners have experienced some serious unit freeze ups and operational issues. More info on this will be provided as it becomes available.*

[update] 08/10/08

After hearing about the success that AVP owners are having with the update here recently, I decided to give it a go myself. I'm happy to report that my AVP update was successful and went through without a hitch. The update took exactly 61 minutes. So it "seems" as though whatever problems were there before, may have now been corrected. After the update I tested the music streaming to make sure that was ok, it was fine.

Firmware

Denon has just announced firmware updates for their flagship AVP-A1HDCI 12CH A/V Processor. There are two updates which are tabulated below. The updates will only benefit users experiencing these operational issues. All updates are cumulative; meaning the latest one will include the previous ones if the unit had not been updated prior. These update corrections are for North America units only – other updates are available for other markets as well.

Models Affected: AVP-A1HDCI, AVR-5803CI

SUBJECT: Correction of the Firmware via DPMS (Denon Product Management Server)

Update #1 April 16th, 2008

SYMPTOM:

If "Hi-Def-signal" of 720p inputs to the unit, it can scale to "1080i" but can not

scale to "1080p".

"Pop" noise occurs when the muting function turns on.

The noise occurs when the input selector is changed.

A different digital signal might be output to "OPT-4" output.

The connectivity of HDMI is improved.

CAUSE: The malfunctions occurred due to bugs in the firmware.

COUNTERMEASURE: corrected the firmware so that no malfunction occurs.

Update #2: June 16, 2008

SYMPTOM:

Addition of the Rhapsody Merge function.

When space is used for the character of SSID, Wi-Fi cannot be set.

Problem for Tuner preset memory when RDS is received.

Scroll speed of "Artist" becomes slow when playback music files with DLNA by network-audio.

Spelling error on web browser display. "Controler" > "Controller"

MVUP/down (master volume up/down) command can affect zone 2 volume if any zone 2 command has been recently sent.

No title via internet radio with the new firmware version 1.60.

When AVP-A1HDCI connects Marantz DV9500 with EXT.IN connection and chose "Monitor2", Sound output stops.

The disc where "Dolby Digital" and "TrueHD" are alternately recorded is reproduced. And, when "Dolby Digital" and "TrueHD" are promptly switched, the sound is not outputted.

When the stream signal of "DTS-HD MA 7.1ch" is reproduced by setting "5.1ch", the sound is distorted.

Noise occur from surround channel when playback a blue-ray disc "The Golden Compass" when connected AVP-A1HDCI and DVD3800BD.

The connectivity of "HDMI" and "CEC" is improved.

CAUSE: The malfunctions occurred due to bugs in the firmware.

COUNTERMEASURE: corrected the firmware so that no malfunction occurs.

In my system I have four large speakers and I get only left and right channels to sound. There is no sound to the phantom center, vocals non existent, and there is no sound the the surround speakers. Whatever setting I tried, and i tried them all, the signal that enters the AVP, according to the front display, is only left and right-but it is not even stereo because i loose all the center and surround data. I did set the speakers to Large, then to None, with same result. If I set the oppo to PCM I get stereo sound only, not multichannel. Anyone else experienced the same? I am thinking to return the oppo.

I have set the oppo in the DVD hdmi input of the AVP. I noticed that in the surround mode list, under DVD, there is no Standard setting there, how come? Believe me it's complicated... But I love the AVP!

I have the same combo so you better get it working..

IIRC, the video has to be set to 1080P for 5.1 SACD to be sent along with it..but I don't have mine hooked up yet to verify this..

They may have consciously elected not to carry the pair - why who knows.. would be dumb IMO not to - the AVP/POA are carried thru Denon Canada and available to every authorized Denon dealer and there are quite a few Denon dealers in the GTA..

Great, there is hope then, I did not know that a video setting would affect anything related to sound. I will try it soon as I can. If you send the data out as raw do you still need to configure speaker's size, distance delay, etc? Very much appreciated your your response. I realize i dont know much...I have lost touch with hi-end audio stuff.

Thank you

Thank you

I was under the impression that it might be your player that can't send over HDMI... you might have to use the analogs (not sure though).

1) Regarding video scaling: The TV picture through the AVP's is wonderful, especially the Hi-Def, great color separation and dynamic range between colors, i really like it. On the other side, standard television looks very nice too but I don't like the stretching of the picture. It is too unnatural. Is there a way to configure the amount of stretching like my Aquos does or find a compromise? I like the scaling quality but not the full stretching.

Under the video processor menu, set aspect to "normal".

Thanks for your reply. If I select normal I end up with undesired sidebars with SD TV. What I would like is a more gentle stretching, full screen with a slight crop to top and bottom, which is what I would get if I deselect the AVP's scaling.

You would have to move up to a dedicated processor for those types of features.

Heres a list of quirks I've found with the 5308, that probably affects you guys too.

-Fix bass management in "non-matrix" mode. (bass is boosted too loud in the surround channels redirected bass.)

-Fix video processor so that "auto" mode outputs 480i at 1080p and 1080p/24 is untouched. (as it is now, 480i is output at 1080i. Setting processor to 1080p fixes it but than outputs 1080p/24 at 60fps.)

-Option to output all resolutions at 1080p/24 (as of now, only 1080p/24 can be output that way.)

-Allow a menu to show what you have each DSP or rear soundfield set to. (as of now, you can only set it when you are actually inputting that source. It might have that feature but I haven't found it in this Labyrinth of a menu!)

Thanks for the info. Yes the menu is a labyrinth indeed. I can confirm that you can only set it when you are inputting that souce. But the web-configuration, which I haven't tried yet, may bypass that step.

you wouldn't think there would be, but one of those quirks - too bad too because if it turns out that the combination of 480i out of the Oppo and upscaling via the AVP, is better than the SD upscaling in the BR player. then I'll be constantly changing the video setting in the Oppo..

Quote:

no - not in the Oppo..The AVP will do the conversion to LPCM and handle all the BM and time alignment chores..

We will finally be able to compare if there is any benefit to having the AVP receive the DSD stream..

You guys definitely need to use the web set-up. It's much easier and more intuitive.
  • First, you need to get your Denon onto your home network. When you plug in the ethernet cable, your router should automatically assign it an IP address. Alternately, you can go into your router first and tell it what address you want it to assign to the AVP (identified in network-speak by its MAC address.)
  • Once it's on your network, log onto the Denon in your browser by just typing in that address, i.e., http://192.xxx.x.xxx . That will bring up the AVP's Home Page. (It has to be powered on, obviously).
  • Once you're in there, look around and orient yourself with the Set-up pages. They're very handy because you can see a lot of the settings for a given source right there on a single page.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Most importantly you can save your settings (along with Audyssey I believe).

I certainly hope so!

My AVP has gone back from where it came, and currently waiting for a replacement. Before disconnecting I saved the configuration, and when the replacement unit turns up I'm hoping I can just upload it. Knowing my luck it'll tell me it's a different unit and won't update it.

I know of two units that have faults I hope its not going to be an ongoing trend.

I must have missed this earlier. Sorry. What was wrong with it?
