Can any calibrators out there inform me on what all is required to fully calibrate a 5020? I'm still a little confused and after reading posts on the ControlCal forums that the only thing that can be adjusted is the grayscale. I'm trying to figure out if calibrating a 9G kuro warrants the same fee from a calibrator as doing another set with more calibrations unlocked in the service menu.

Hello DevilDog151,

From what we know today, an interface is required to access the grayscale adjustments in the service menu, as well as access to the user menu. This will allow for the grayscale and user menu parameters to be adjusted properly. While there aren't as many adjustments, or memory options as the Elite model, the display does require a good deal of time in order to setup and access the factory menu system.

If you are basing your calibration fee on the time involved, the Elite's take longer than the non-elites, but it will also come down to how many sources are in the system.

Good Pictures!

It all depends on what you mean by "fully" - there's no video display I know of that can be "fully" calibrated. Even a $4500 Lumagen Radiance XD video processor, as nearly perfect as it can make just about any video display, has some "holes" that, if filled, would lead to an even better calibration.

What can be done with the 5020 is extremely helpful... but the only adjustments accessible with special software (that the calibrator has to purchase and make up the cost of in calibration fees) are 2 controls that adjust the grayscale. However, done correctly, the 5020 calibration will make some of the primaries and secondaries more accurate even though there are no accessible controls for them - it's just a lucky break that seems to be pretty consistent. The 5020 (and 6020) are amazingly good after this calibration. As already mentioned, having fewer adjustments doesn't necessarily mean a faster calibration. Doing a good 5020/6020 calibration usually takes just about as long as a calibration for some other displays that have more controls. Calibration is the only way to get the 5020/6020 color temperature accurate since none of the modes are close enough to 6500K to not be making the image too warm or too cool.

I just posted this question in the 9G Kuro Settings/Issues thread, but now I'm thinking that this might be a better place to ask:

I am having my 5020 professionally calibrated next week and I received an email suggesting that I black out the room as much as possible for the calibration, even suggesting that I should consider covering all of the windows with black trash bags. My 5020 resides in a room that is open to much of the rest of the house and gets fairly bright (although it only gets direct sunlight for a small portion of the afternoon - not when the calibration is being done).

How anal do I need to be about darkening the room for the calibration? I'm spending a fair bit of money here, and I'd hate to think that I'm not getting my money's worth by calibrating in a lit room. If the day is dark and dreary, then the room should be fairly dark; if the day is bright and sunny then the room will be bright too. Is it important that I make every effort to get the room dark, or should I just leave it alone and let the pro do his best with the conditions he is given?

Chris Eberle and/or Fred Dietzel cover your area and I have asked them to respond directly to you in this Thread..

Chris Eberle at Precision Video - ISFccc [8G] [9G] [M] - Serving New York Metro, Westchester, Hudson Valley, Albany, New Jersey, Connecticut and Eastern Pennsylvania.
Fred Dietzel at Enhanced Audio & Video - ISFccc [8G] [9G] [M] - Serving South central Pennsylvania.

It is very important that the room be as dark as possible, preferably with no ambient light shining onto the display at all. This is especially critical during gray scale measurements and calibration. Any light reflecting off of the display will be picked up by the calibrators color analyzer or colorimeter and skew those measurements.

#97 ·
I would echo Fred's comments. The room should be as dark as possible to ensure accurate measurements. At some point though, the black level and white level should be set in light typical to the room. This is important so that shadow detail is preserved and contrast is maximized. Room lighting will affect the human perception of the darkest details. Black levels set in a dark room will look crushed when the lights are on or there is sunlight coming in a window.
