Here in euro we have the 50i/50i - I assume that fewer frames per second AND with the same bitrate translate into - pherhaps - better image quality (less compression per frame)
(but on the other hand, we probably have less quality motion also)
The Panny 60p mode is 28Mbps (bits per second), which is 3.5 MB/s (bytes per second).
Class 10 cards can write at the least 10 MB/s (I think the Extreme series from Sandisk can do 30 MB/s), which is almost three times what you need to do 28Mbps.
In other words, a class 6 will do just fine here. Even a good class 4 should be able to, though I personally wouldn't chance it.
Note that some DSLRs have been recording H.264 video at 40Mbps for over a year now, and some hybrid P&S cameras (like one of the Canon's) have been recording 40Mbps MJPEG 720p for over 4 years, so 28Mbps in terms of bandwidth isn't ground breaking per say.
BTW, the HD video SD cards are just a gimmick. Just get yourself a good standard class 6.
I guess we still don't know a release date for these camcorders, although a Panasonic rep at the PMA show said "in time for graduation", which means it could be as late as May. I'm hoping for mid April or earlier myself.
Which websites are you looking at for first signs of early info re release date? I thought i saw a news clip which said mid March for UK. The B&H store says "Available April".
I find it unusual that it hasn't shown up on Amazon.com yet. The Canon HF S20/21/200 camcorders, which are also estimated to be released in the April timeframe, have been there pretty much since they're introduction. In fact, B&H is the only US retailer I've found that mentions the HDC-TM700 at all.
It's now available in Japan, in case some of the US or Canadian folks want to pay the premium ($1550 plus shipping) to be the first to have it or to get the 96GB internal storage:
I agree, unless they made similar comments about 24Mbps 60i video.
Is it really true that the SDXC in the TM700 will only handle 64GB? The spec is capable of handling up to 2TB, so I wonder if this comment was within the context of currently-available memory cards or if Panasonic short-sightedly limited it to 64GB.
As for the playback issues with 60p, I'm willing to accept that fact that I'll have to downconvert the video to lower bitrate and/or frame rate for any practical use in the short term, archiving the raw footage until such a time that I can use it in its full glory; I just don't want to end up on the trailing edge of the curve.
It's promising that, even with their dislikes, they gave it an 8.0 rating.
Complaining about memory in this day & age is idiotic. Sure Flash mem. may not be the cheapest.
I'd love to see camcorders with built-in storage offer cold swap-ability; 32GB flash, well make it plug&plug (i.e. use SSD with enclosure instead of bare) ....swap SSD's like SDHC & ditto with HDD's.
If they did this then the more bitrate the better. Of-couse SDXC will fix this issue, in a lot longer timeframe than SSD's will become cheap (assuming they are not now...)
The camcorders have finally shown up on Amazon's US website, with a May 1 estimated ship date. No big surprise on the price: $1K for the TM700 as B&H is quoting.

That may be because I cancelled my order from B&H for a Panny TM300 and refused delivery when it arrived last month, a couple days after the TM700 was announced. When they asked why I cancelled, I told them because I'm waiting for the TM700. That was before they had it on their website and they had not even heard about it yet. A couple weeks later, they had the TM700 on their site.
If you only count time from announcement to shipping, the Canon is far behind. The Canon and Sony were announced at CES and the Panasonic wasn't announced until a month later, and it appears the Canon and Panasonic will come out about the same time.
I'd say Panasonic had a problem if their camcorder was the same price as the Sony, but since it's $200 less and $400 less than the only Canon with an EVF, I'm sure many people will think it's worth waiting for.
I do wish the Panny was out about a month earlier because I have an event the second weekend in April where I'd really like to have it. But, I'll wait.
