They petitioned the FCC to change to channel 9 and that change was approved.

And those of us in the Dallas-Ft. Worth market who suffer interference on co-channel KFWD from KCEN even during the slightest tropo are still puzzled about how and why this change was approved.

There are nights when I try to watch the WFAA news replay on KFWD and get absolutely nothing on KFWD. Inevitably on those nights, I can tune to RF-10 and get KWTX, indicating that Waco/Temple signals are pounding in.

More than likely your interference is a result of adjacent channel from KWTX on 10 rather than co-channel from KCEN on 9.

KCEN operates at a much lower power level than KFWD and they would have to be coming in 10 DB higher to cause co-channel interference.

I have a Scala quad cut channel 28 antenna with a Citgo channel 28 preamp 120 ft up on the STL tower in Waco to receive our KYLE 50KW in Bryan and when tropo is active the FOX 29 in Beaumont wipes it out.

KFWD still operates at 13 kW. The 55 kW facility, although approved, has not yet been built and is unlikely to be built anytime soon.

According to FCC records, KCEN runs 25 kW.

If KWTX were the culprit of the QRM, would it not also impact co-channel KTVT on RF-11?

On those nights when KFWD is lost at my location (40 miles north of Cedar Hill), KTVT is still 5 by 5.

I wasn't aware that KFWD hadn't built out to 55KW. Normally co-channel interference causes a straight switch.

If you drove from Waco to Dallas back when KCEN and WFAA were both on channel 9 your TV just switched from one to the other around Hillsborough.

One idiosyncrasy of digital TV related to the fact that the sidebands are "above" the visual carrier in frequency (and the visual carrier is at the lower end of the channel) is that adjacent upper channels interfere at a signal level approximately 20db less than adjacent lower channels.

As a result of that anomaly, KWTX would have to be 20db stronger to interfere with channel 11 than it takes for it to interfere with channel 9.

I was able to resolve my KCEN-DT issue by just grabbing Grande's QAM feed. I was expecting to get more channels out of it, though. I can't pick up Fox, CBS, or PBS.

???

Grande carries KCEN, KWTX, KXXV, and KWKT all in clear QAM.

You should be able to get them all with any clear QAM tuner.

I don't know how you're getting your QAM (media center or just straight to your tv) but on my tv via Grande QAM - CBS is 10.1, CW is 10.2, PBS is like in the 60s and Fox is in like the 80s channels. NBC and ABC are like 403.1 and 405.1. They are a bit scattered to say the least.

It's through my Media Center. I've run the TV setup/Channel Scanner on two separate machines and still don't get Fox or CBS. They've both got the same tuner, so maybe that's the problem.

Are you just using the scanner program? Some of the clear qam channels here did not scan and I had to add them manually. That may be your problem.

If somebody else in your area has a hdhomerun with clearqam you will be able to see the channel mappings listed here. http://www.silicondust.com/support/channels/

Yes, I tried the manual route as well. I bought another tuner card yesterday, so I'm going to try that; make sure it's not a hardware issue on my end.

Got the other tuner card in and can now pick up 10.1 KWTX. I still can't get FOX or PBS. I have 83.3 for FOX KWKT and 83.1 for KNCT, but I have no signal for those channnels. I may need to just get another tuner card and bring those in on the antenna.

Are there any other Grande QAM users out there using Media Center?

Are you setting them up using QAM256?

Yes.

I figured it out. I am subscribed to the basic cable through Grande. The filter they put on the line blocks out the low 80's channels. I bypassed the filter as a test, and sure enough, KWKT and KNCT come in just fine.

Maybe it's a question for FOX44CE, but I thought, per the FCC, that all the local broadcast channels were supposed to be available through unencrypted QAM. Is that correct?

#6,346 ·
I don't know if it's a FCC mandate or just something the cable companies do for our benefit. I know my friend in China Spring just got Grande and the technician put a filter out on the locked powerline hub in his front yard that blocks everything but internet going through. So he can't pick up QAM channels on his tv, he just gets the internet that he pays for.

For viewers with cable ready TV (QAM) the FCC requires that all cable companies pass at least the primary channel of all local TV stations un-encrypted.

If you subscribe to basic-basic (analog tier only) they do not have to deliver a digital signal at all.

just an update for those suddenlink media center users.... not sure if the psip data was fixed but kmay is being detected on 23.1 now (atleast on my system) but it does detect as the SD version and not the HD but thats a quick guide data fix. they also fixed kamu's mapping as well (had to manually add them before)

for reference this is what my media center detects the channels as now (it automatically adds/removes channels as they are detected):

3.1 kbtxdt

12.1 kamudt

23.1 kcendt/kmay

28.1 kyledt

40.1 krhddt

FYI:

Not sure if any of you know this but Suddenlink has been providing Clear QAM for their Expanded channel line up for over a month now. Here's my HDHomerun channel scan for my SageTV.
