My choices were narrowed down to two: either an upgraded AVR with these capabilities, or a stand-alone solution. Sonos seemed to be one of the best, if not the best, stand-alone solution. So, my strategy was to evaluate Sonos for a week, return it, then evaluate a new receiver, and finally pick the better choice.
I picked up a ZP90 player and the Zone Bridge, connected it to my audio system using a Toslink cable, and was up and running in about 15 minutes. This is incredibly intuitive technology. Since upgrading to an iPhone 4, I had a spare iPhone 3G doing nothing, so I loaded the Sonos iPhone controller on it.
At the end of the week's evaluation period, I tried to get myself to return the Sonos as per the plan, but I couldn't! I have fallen in love with the technology and simply cannot give it up. The sound quality of the streaming audio exceeds my expectations, and having so many music sources to choose from is intoxicating. And the iPhone app is as good as the stand-alone Sonos controller (especially if you can dedicate an iPhone). The last time I was so excited about a new technology was 15 years ago with my first TiVo. Sonos is that good!
