Received my 5010 from Projector People last night.

I had a 8350 and the 5010 beats it hands down in black levels & sharpness. No contest.
*I still have the 8350 so I was able to do an A/B comparison. The 8350 does output a great picture for its price range.

Pixel Alignment:
*This is located under the Extended menu & not mentioned in the current manual.

**It appears that the European model may have the LCD pixel alignment hidden.
Here are the steps to access it.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=297

I played with the pixel alignment and here's how it works.
*My red was off about 1/2 pixel to the left. Other 2 panels where aligned with each other.

1. You first choose a panel color.
Either Red or Blue. Green can not be adjusted but it doesn't matter as it's used at the center point to move the other 2 panels.

2. You then adjust the panel in each of the four corners Vertically and Horizontally.
I believe the panel movement is in 1/20 of a pixel movement. It's definitely fine movement and a lot less than 1 pixel.

3. Then you will be prompted to select a section on the grid to finish the alignment.
I picked the worst red offset which was near the middle.
A "+" will be displayed at the grid allowing you to see the panel movement.
You can then select another location and align.
You can keep repeating this as needed.
Once done, I had virtually perfect convergence.

*Other view points at pixel alignment.

Focusing:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=670

Keystone:
I played with the keystone and it does seem to work well but you will lose a bit of sharpness/focus. Probably not noticeable in normal viewing. I recommend not using keystone and using the lens shift.

Iris:
I can't hear it 5-6 feet above my head but from 3-4 feet, you can hear a slight rumbling sound when it makes adjustments.
*This is during quiet passages and scenes change from light to dark or vise versa.
Otherwise, you won't hear it over normal audio.
It's not bothersome like the high pitch tone the Benq W6000 I had for a few weeks but seems to be a bit louder than my 8350.
If off though, the blacks look great. I basically do not "see" the black bars any more.

Fan:
The ECO mode is dead quiet.

The Normal mode is a little louder than my 8350 but sounds like a PC fan.
Measured -40db about 2 feet away using my iPad DB meter.
I do hear it in quiet/silent dialog.

Picture Quality:
PQ is great. I used Art/Mikes settings from projectorreviews & did some tweaking for now but I'm using Living Room mode to get more lumens.
I will do a full calibration later as I get some decent lamp hours.
With the extra lumens and contrast, you get a great picture with that "pop" of DLP.

Edit: I have switched to Natural mode. Living Room appears to have a red push & too bright for a bat cave.

Edit: 1/14/2013
Switched back to Living room mode

Ceiling mount:
I haven't seen Chief or Peerless release an official mount yet for the 5010. Only the 3010.
I'm using the Peerless PRG-UNV mount.
I like it because I can mount it straight to the ceiling or add an extension pole later if needed.

My room is fully light controlled so ECO mode it will be. The iris on my Z2000 was pretty loud but I only really noticed it when there was lighting or a flame flashing frequently making it go nuts.

As soon as I found out the 5010 works with my existing panasonic 3D glasses that I bought for my plasma, I was completely sold on it.

-Can you also test out gaming with the 5010...I would love to hear some more opinions on the input Lag from people who own this projector. Thanks Again!

I would also like some details about actual gaming experience with the 5010/6010 series. My projectors are used about 30% for gaming, 60% for movies, and about 10% for TV, so gaming IS a pretty big chunk. I currently have an Epson 1080UB. Gaming has been good on that. I know that preliminary data about the 5010 show about a 80ms lag. I'm not sure how that compares with my 1080UB. Having some details about actual gaming experience with the 5010/6010 would certainly be appreciated.

Thread /w input lag tests for the 5010 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1377652

I played Dark Souls on the PS3, jumping puzzles annoyed me as did things that required a split second reaction. I also played Battlefield 3 on the PC and was able to do well but when I saw someone and they saw me at the same time they usually won. I would also get frustrated knowing I could be doing better if I was on my PC monitor.

I played a couple flight simulations and it wasn't as bad, things don't happen that instantly in a aircraft anyway depending on the type you are flying.

Bottom line is you may not notice it if you are a casual gamer or play certain games where reaction time is not important. You will notice it if you play FPS games, connect a PC to your projector or are a semi-serious gamer. If you spend more than 50% of your time gaming its probably not the projector for you. I am about 50 / 50 and am looking at the newer DLP projectors instead.

I also want to vote with my wallet here and I have written Epson an email letting them know they really dropped the ball by making this generation of projectors ~60ms slower than the previous generation. They should be working towards lower input lag every generation, just like monitor manufacturers IMO.

#82 ·
I know it would be better for gaming from what several people have reported on this forum, but I have not tried it. Personally I would not buy it because while it was really good for a while all kinds of projectors have just come out and are still being released that are, in my opinion, slightly better than it for movies, and since it does have some amount of lag (albeit less than the Epson) there are also some DLP's coming out that should be better than it for gaming.

We need to get some solid input lag numbers for the Sony HW30, JVC RS-45, Mits HC7800 & BenQ W7000

#83 ·
I just tried to add the 5010 to my Harmony 550 and it doesn't exist in the database.

I configured the remote as the 3010 and it works.

*You'll still need the Epson remote to do fine calibration and to do panel alignment but using the 3010 model will at least allow you to turn it on/off and access some menu items.

Are certain technologies better than others for lag? I wonder if there is an inherent difference between LCD, DLP, or LCOS projectors. There must be a reason why the new Epsons have a larger lag. My guess is that when "processing" technologies are added onto projectors, the greater the possibility of lag. So, the new generation with advanced features may contribute to the lag problem. When they tweak a chip for better processing of light and color, it may negatively affect speed. Probably Epson sided with enhanced movie viewing over gaming with their new line. Maybe reducing the lag would also result in reducing the quality of the image somewhat and they weren't will to do that. Just my speculation.

Can you make some close-up pictures of the box? Also menus and screenshots would be nice. Type of screen..etc. THX certified ? Art said it had wireless HDMI... i dont think so.. is he correct ?

Got my Epson 3D glasses and tested them out on Disney's A Christmas Carol.

WOW!

3D is awesome!

Found myself trying to bat away the snow flakes as they drifted toward my face.

I seen no ghosting or crosstalk.

Didn't see any flickering but did see some judder on fast side to side panning.

Not having the Dynamic Iris isn't a bad thing because the tint of the glasses act like an ND filter and helps contrast.

The blacks looked decent. Not washed out or crushed.

The projector auto detects the content and switches to 3D mode automatically.

You may want to disable the 3D warning or it's displayed every time the projector switches to 3D.

Only drawback is that it does switch to Normal mode on the bulb and can't be switched to ECO but I think with the tint/filter of the glasses, ECO may not be bright enough.

Overall, we like the 3D PQ.

The 2D to 3D is ok but nothing like a real 3D movie.

is the 3d effect better or as good as the movie theater? or better then the 3d led tv's?

Yes certain technologies (DLP) are historically better for lag in my experience, but this is not always the case, there are outliers. And yes, it is the processing technology that is causing the lag however this technology can be optimized as we have seen with other projectors. At the very least, they can allow you to disable it in the options menu with a game mode, that way you get the best processing in movie mode and the fastest response in game mode.

They clearly made a design decision somewhere along the line and deemed it too expensive to reduce the response time with their new 3D technology / processing. Hopefully they receive a large enough number of complaints and correct it with next years models.

The 3D effect I witnessed was better than any TV I have seen. It was also better than being in a movie theater, because everything felt so in your face due to sitting so close to the screen. I used to think 3D was a big gimmick until it wasnt just jumping out in front of me in the distance like at the theater but surrounding me on a 100"+ screen

I'd say it's at least equal or probably better than any 3D LED/Plasma TV's Demos (Sony, Panasonic, Samsung) I've seen due to the screen size.

I sit about 10 feet from a 117" so the screen fills my entire field of view.

I also have a light controlled room(bat cave) that probably helps the 3D effect like the movie theaters.

I'd say it's pretty close if not equal to the Imax 3D effect/viewing at the movie theaters.

When watching 3D, it's probably best to watch in total darkness if possible to block out any ambient light that may negate/wash out the 3D effect.

I think the key is to have an adequate screen size, probably a 1-1.5x viewing distance and light controlled room to get the best 3D experience.

*The projector default to 3D Dynamic preset/color mode when switching to 3D mode.

I find that the color is a little rich/red and adjusting the Skin Tone to 5 evens out the red.

#91 ·
*Be cautious and very mindful when making adjustments.

I played around with it a little more and you can skew it up easily.

I was aligning the left side and it looked good but then when I looked at the right side, the red panel was crooked. Like a full pixel to high on the right side only and at angle.

I had to restore back to default and start over.

When you are adjusting the panels at specific coordinates, it's like tapping a piece of glass. If you tap down just on the top left, it moves the entire panel down on the left as a whole but the right side corner stays in place.

So the right will now require adjustment.

*See attached picture example of what happens.

I've found sticking to the center coordinates to make panel adjustment was the safest without skewing one of the panels to be aligned crooked.

I basically leave all 4 corner adjustments at default.

Then the last step of the alignment allows you to select specific coordinates and make adjustments. I select coordinates near the center and make adjustments.

*I also found that when ceiling mounted, it seems the direction of adjustment is reversed.

I should mentioned that I did not have to upgrade my HDMI cables for 3D (HDMI v1.4a compliant).

I'm at about 46 feet total cable length (25ft in wall, 15 feet from wall to projector, 6 feet from receiver to wall) - there are 2 HDMI wall plates in this chain, which are from Monoprice.

I'm using all Monoprice cables.

25ft 22AWG CL2 High speed cable & the other 2 are 24AWG CL2 Standard speed cables.

I actually have a Dell Latitude E6510 with a i5 CPU and when the fan kicks in on high, it's about the same loudness as the 5010 in normal mode.

That's fairly loud. How is it in eco mode?

I'm a big gamer and am curious about the lag myself. As long as I get more kills than deaths I'll be happy.
