I am going to build a server for my HTPC and was wondering what the benefits of each would be? Obviously a tower looks like more of a computer, but not sure if this will matters since I will put it in the basement and no one will be looking at it.
Just looking to find out the pros and cons of each.
Good luck with your build. One thing I'd think about is, how accurately have you estimated your storage requirements? Many people pick a number of anticipated HDD bays and then multiply it by 1.5-2 to make sure they are covered.

Actually..96, since one of the chassis was already racked, when I took that picture.
However, I'm not using all of them. I only racked 4 of these chassis to give me 48 ports...just in case.
These chassis are custom, OEM, that I came into possession, when I acquired a failed telecom company and their assets. These are 2U chassis with 12 hotswap ports each, and each chassis is designed to house two motherboards in sliding 1U brackets in the rear. I had to do soem hacking to use them normally.
They just had these sitting in their warehouse. I took one look at them, and my home server light bulb went on...
Hotswap porn anybody?
While they were being racked...
