In case anyone is interested I ran across some info today where I see JVC has some sort of rebate expiring the end of the month on the TD1. Priced now with rebate at under $1000. For some this may make putting up with some of it's limitations worth while. There's nothing like buying last years technology for getting a bargain.

Yes, I saw that $999 price the other day. So, for less than the original cost of the TD1, you can get the camcorder, the Clyclopital3D stereo base extender, their filter adapter and a great macro lens. That's a serious 3D kit.

I been getting pretty good results using Edius to convert my JVC files. Then I edit with Vegas or Power Dir.

I have found using my base extender to shoot depth scenes and then using Edius and editing the depth even more on there makes it pretty extreme. I made one scene I shot look like it goes so far into the TV, I couldn't believe it.

I now edit all 3D using my iMAC connected to my LG passive 3D set, works great and the 3D is really good.

Cyclopital3D has 3 new wide angle adapters for the TD1 -11mm, 25mm and 28mm (35mm equivalents) - $399 each. Pricey, but I'll probably still get one. The one thing I've regretted most about my footage is that I haven't been able to go wide nearly as much as I'd like.

If you follow the link at the bottom of this page, there are a couple of YouiTube videos that illustrate the differences between the 11, 25 and 28mm focal lengths. They're dramatic. The 11mm, of course, is going to give significant barrel distortion, but the 25 and 28 look much more natural.

I'm leaning toward the 25mm adapter right now. At its widest, the TD1 is about 42mm equivalent in 3D mode - so not wide at all. Another advantage of a wide angle lens is that Steadicam shots are easier. I'm hoping that the heavier weight of the camcorder/adapter will help me stay steadier, too.

Here's a little update, if anyone is interested.

My production hiatus is just about over. With what looks like a VERY early spring, I should be shooting again soon. My camcorder has been out for repair for over a month (HDMI output started displaying only green
), but it should be back in a week or so. Edius is improving with each build and looks to be headed for final release around July, give or take. I'm also finishing up a new computer build - based on a Core i7 3930. Encode times have improved significantly over my Core i7 920 system, and I'm still tweaking. All my video work from now on will be with SSDs, so the HDD bottleneck will be gone, too.

I look forward to more 3D sharing and commiserating with you guys in the coming months.

Joe, I am really keen to learn more about the MVC-encoder in Edius 6.5. And if there will be the possiblity to burn 3D BDs at least without menue.

There seems to run a little bit the "legitimation" discussiion that this kind of technology is sooo expensive, that it will not be in Edius 6.5 maybe (but they ignore the fact that even 80 Euro products like Vegas Moviestudio HD platinum is able to do that, beside the PD10 beside Pro X4).

Yes, I'm really interested in finding out about Blu-ray 3D burning, too.

You're talking about Corel Video Pro X4, right? I wasn't aware that it included the ability burn such discs.

They have added that feature in Magix Pro X4 - but I have not tested that yet. I think I will stay with Vegas, maybe test Edius if they offer an MVC-encoder and the capability to created 3D BD profile 5.

Here's another update on my TD1.

I got the camcorder back today and went out to shoot some test footage. Part of the repair, apparently, involved a firmware update. It also reset the camcorder to its defaults. I didn't think about that, so I just started shooting. After about an hour, it occurred to me that I might be shooting in AVCHD mode instead of MVC mode. Sure enough, I was. Drat! So I switched to MVC and retraced my steps.

It was a happy accident, though, and here's why. The firmware upgrade improved the quality of AVCHD side by side mode DRAMATICALLY. With old AVCHD video, even at its highest quality, I noticed MPEG artifacts and (the real killer) lots of edge enhancement. AFAIK, there was no way to defeat it, and the effect on the video was awful. Fine details could look dreadful, especially if there was much movement. That's all gone now. Of course, AVCHD is not as sharp as MVC, but it's improved 1000%. I'll post some clips in the next few days. I had taken several shots that I liked, and based on what I saw while reviewing the footage, I won't hesitate to use them. They're that good. I won't be shooting AVCHD much, but it's nice to know that it doesn't involve nearly the compromise it used to.

I traded my JVC RS45 for the Epson 6010 3D projector. The JVC had serious problems with 120hz 3D video (like the output of the TD1). It ghosted too much. The Epson displays TD1 video beautifully - not even close to the level of ghosting I saw on the JVC RS45. The Epson has 480hz panels, and it's a far superior 3D projector.

I also added a polarizer to the TD1 (77mm for the Cyclopital adapter). The Cyclopital 24mm wide angle adapter is next. There are shots it will give me that are irresistible.

It's good to be doing 3D again. My layoff was far too long.

Hey Joe- Seems they had your TD1 in repair forever. Did they say what the delay was? I have some friends here who had a similar problem with JVC professional cameras and decks. Their excuse was always backlog of repair jobs.

Glad to hear you're back in the game with improved firmware too.

Maybe they're still testing the firmware update. Honestly, I'm a little concerned about it. AVCHD mode offers a HUGE improvement, but so far MVC mode seems considerably softer than I'm used to. I had two perfect days for shooting, and the results are not as good as I expected. I've become accustomed to razor-sharp video, and I'm not getting it.

When I sent the camera in for repair, they sent it back after a month without having done anything, because they said there was no part available for it. Of course, it's a current model, so that's not true. They intercepted it on its way to me, with the promise they would expedite the repair. It took several more calls and substantial extra delay. Eventually, they overnighted it to me, but that was close to 2 months after I sent it in.

The university where I used to teach would not buy JVC products, because of poor experiences like that. I knew last year it might become an issue. However, I was very pleased with the quality of the TD1, so it was worth the risk. The next couple of days I'm going to be doing more testing to try to determine if it's user error or a problem with the camcorder (and maybe with the update) that's causing the drop in MVC quality. I'll keep you posted.

2 months-- You do have the record of all my friends who have complaints about JVC service.

The type of shooting you are doing, you really should consider getting that Panasonic. Then just use the JVC for your expanded stereo base needs in your projects. But wait until after NAB to see what's new. Are you going?

I got the Vivitar closeup lens kit in today. Nice carrying case! I need to get it out and try it now. The +10 can focus to 3 inches but very tight depth of focus. May not work for 3D because of that. +4 is nice though. +1 and +2 are redundant since there is little advantage of those over the TD10 in it's own macro mode.

I may end up with the Panasonic, and if things don't get resolved very quickly with the JVC, it might be soon. The Panny has a greater zoom range, wider wide angle, slightly wider stereo base and more pro features. I'd also be able to drop the files right into Vegas. That a powerful set of pluses. I'll wait until NAB to see if anything new is on the horizon. And no, I'm not going. I have too many responsibilities with my folks to leave them. You'll be my eyes and ears on the floor.
I'm looking forward to your report.

Disappointed I won't see you there but I understand your needs at home. Went through it for 3 years with my father and his battle with Alzheimer's. As time progressed I went from full care giver to needing assistance with specialists and the last 9 months, with Hospice. It ended in January. Now I'm just wrapping things up as the executor of his estate.

I doubt I'll see anything new from Panasonic as they have their triplets for 3D. You'd like to see the three levels they sell so you can see what costs so much in the bigger versions. I'm really hoping to see something new from Sony but not for me. I'm really happy with the TD10 plus my other options. It's perfect for my amateur work these days.

My Godfather had PSP, and I took care of him the last 6 1/2 years of his life. It may sound cliche, but it really was a blessing for me. He was a great guy. My mom and dad are going through declines now, but they're more independent. Still, they need quite a bit of help.

I'm striking an unusual deal and will definitely be getting the Panasonic Z10000. I'll have more details in a few weeks, but I should have it in hand within a month or so.
Meanwhile, I'll work toward getting the issues resolved with the JVC.

Could someone help me out with Edius 3D Build 8? I didn't realize they were going to stop providing it at the end of March.
I suppose this might mean it will be ready in May, since May 4th is the last day it will work.
