I agree with you it is a preference. I was just making a suggestion :) .. This is the way I have it implemented. I can adjust it to match the exact AR the image has starting from 1.33:1 to 2.75:1.

Why not use a 16:9 screen and mask it for 2.35:1 content. This way you have a bigger 1.85:1 image. I have it that way with my setup and I am fairly happy with it for both aspect ratios.
