There is. When the drive voltage from the AVR is too low the signal to noise ratio will be lower. That tends not to be an issue with subs, as most noise occurs well above the sub woofer frequency...

That's a bit of a mis-match. Rather than take the gain on the sub above 0 I'd increase it in the AVR. In theory having each roughly the same relative to 0 would probably give the best results.

The radiation pattern from a sub woofer is omni-directional, so which way it faces won't make any difference to you or the neighbors, the result will be the same.
