Both. Streaming for convenience and discs for quality. It seems Sony and the Blu-ray disc association see it the same way, and I think they are right.

I'm still not getting above 720p with Netflix, and even the 720p frequently drops to 480p and below. Anyone else still experiencing this?

I understand that it's not and 1080p/30fps is generally better because it captures all of each frame. I understand that the data rate is the same as 1080i/60fps.

24fps, 30fps, 48fps and 60fps will all be included with near absolute certainty.

BTW, am I the only one who is puzzled why 1080p/30fps was not included in the initial Blu-ray standard?

This is interesting news. Let's face it, we all would prefer a Panasonic engineered set vs. an LG engineered set -- even if the raw panels used were the same.

IMO, 10 bit color and support for 48 fps and 60 fps along with some likelihood of support for rec. 2020 -- is not a baby step forward.

No surprise here. I've predicted this myself for a long time. We're lucky to even be getting 10bit color (and maybe rec. 2020). But as long as they are including 10bit color with support for 48fps...

I think realistically -- for the kind of quality we all want -- 100 GB disks are needed, especially for HFR (48fps and 60fps) and longer length movies. Or at least 66 GB disks.

Has there ever been any digital medium that is truly 'absolutely theft proof'? No. I hope I'm wrong, but I do not expect anything above 4:2:0 for any consumer format.

This is why I don't think we are going to get more than 10bit 4:2:0, as anything more is just getting too close to the master quality, which the studios understandably would not want. We may get...

Indeed let's hope, especially Panasonic since they tend to have the best designed and engineered sets (not that Sony is any slouch).

I certainly don't expect UHD blu-ray to be a smashing success. I do believe it can (and should) coexist with streaming and still be profitable for the industry.

Yes, you definitely made the right move. The VT60 is a reference display, and many would kill to get a new one this late in the game -- let alone a new one at $1500!

Isn't the long term strategy with OLED that it will eventually be cheaper to make than LCD? Let's face it, if OLED is cheaper than LCD in a few years it is likely to take over the consumer TV market.

Well, I think there will be blu-ray 4K/UHD if for no other reason than it's relatively easy to do technically using the same kinds of discs. We'll see though I guess.

I'm glad to see the positive reviews for this set, but there is no way I'm buying a curved screen! No matter how slight. Just not acceptable to me.

What is this listed 2Channel decode nonsense for TrueHD and DTS Master Audio? Does this mean these players cannot decode 5.1 or 7.1 channel True HD or DTS-MA and send out as multi-channel PCM?

I would think so, though I would question whether one could see the difference between 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 at the same bit rate for UHD. 4:2:0 at 2160x3840 is equivalent to 4:4:4 at 1080x1920. At such...
