My only issue with Kentsfield/Conroe/Allendale is heat and power consumption. Not quite as easy to fit into SFF builds. I'm definitely not suggesting building one based on used parts. Just saying...

Starting with Wolfdale, Celerons and Pentiums are actually pretty darned capable. If not for motherboard failures, I'd still be happily running Celeron E3300s and Pentium E5200s on the HTPCs....

Thing is both Celeron and Pentium are equally capable for HTPC tasks as an i3 barring support for 3D. Hence for me, it's Celeron/Pentium and in cases when those aren't fast enough (normally for...

I find the price difference between i3 and i5 (4400 or 4500) is generally just $50 or so. Personally, nowadays I either go for Core-based Celeron/Pentium or i5 quad-core. I just don't find...

I agree. Having an SSD on the HTPC has turned it from PC to appliance. Reduction in load times in Media Browser 2 were definitely higher than half a second. Prior to upgrading to an SSD, I'd...

I actually do this on 2x1TB 840 EVO (separate drives acting as source and target). Granted I don't do it everyday but I'd process a whole bunch of disks in a weekend or something when I receive my...

Figure at a generous estimate of 8 GiB per hour (I think my HD recordings usually clock in between 6-8 GiB), that's around 116 episodes on 1TB (931 GiB). Really, the only reason cable company...

MCM has free shipping but it's only for orders $200 up so kinda useless unless you're planning on like five RPi2 builds or something. You could always check the local Fry's or something. It's still...

Newark, MCM Electronics, etc. A reminder if using cable, I believe copy once and pay per view are a no go for the RPi.

In the US:

Standalone Blu-ray Player: $50-80
TOTAL COST: $50-80

BD-ROM Drive for PC: $40
PowerDVD or WinDVD: $50-60
TOTAL: $90-100 (might need to spend more for future updates)

Not sure...

Hmm, you're right. I was using AnandTech's Bench tool to make comparisons and I mistakenly assumed the A6-5200 was Trinity. Didn't realize it was Kabini (which actually is comparable to Bay Trail)....

Couldn't agree more. Any specific reason why OP needs a PC and can't get a standalone? Because standalone is less expensive both right now and in the long run (no need to pay for software upgrades)...

Sad thing here is even a lowly J1900 can more or less match dual-core A4 performance. Celeron Ivy Bridge or newer? Good luck with the equivalently priced AMD option. Aside from outliers running...

Z-series supports overclocking (for K series CPU). H-series does not. Mind, I'm not a fan of MSI. Had an MSI motherboard with VRM failure doing OC. I tend to stick with Asus, Gigabyte or Intel.

ES_Revenge's suggestions are quite sound. H97 instead of Z97, 4590/4690 instead of S. Ditch the 850 Pro for a less expensive SSD.

If you still want this build for eventual 4K and H.265 support, forget about the NUC. Sure the HD 6000 may be faster compared to the HD 4600 but by the time HDMI 2.0, 4K and H.265 becomes standard,...

Supposed to be automatic for desktop clients. Not sure how well syncing multi-gigabyte files will be, though. It's not exactly something I'd attempt with my paltry 5 Mbps upload speed.
