If nothing works then maybe you did get a defective unit. It happens sometimes.

You can get DVD quality from SPDIF which is Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS...

Those are active speakers and meant to be directly connected to a TV's audio outputs. They have their own power. You're not supposed to connect them to the speaker terminals of a AV Receiver.
