Encryption isn't the problem, it's the copy protection, i.e. "copy once" vs "copy freely".

I use Yatse for Android and it controls MPC-HC...

I use Yatse for Android and it controls MPC-HC just fine for me, though I only use pretty basic commands like play/pause/stop.

One issue I've seen from Gotham is volume levels, they seem to be all over the place, i.e. recorded TV shows are much softer than live TV, different TV channels have huge differences in loudness....

As noted, you can use a cable card tuner such as HDHRPrime or Ceton to work around the encryption issue, the key is whether the channels you want to watch are flagged "copy once" or "copy freely"....

Well, I agree that it's somewhat frustrating that HTPCs with networked cablecard tuners finally became affordable and viable just in time for MS and others to seemingly abandon this niche market....
