You still will need a sub for those. Amazon has a good deal on a JBL ES150PBK subwoofer for $160. That and the monitor 70's would be a pretty nice 2.1 setup without spending much at all.

For $100 a pair pick those up. That is a great starting point! Don't worry about the speakers being damaged, they will be fine with that receiver.

I was under that impression too, however if the power amplifier, like my Crown XLS, has an input sensitivity of 1.4v you need one. Not all power amps require 1.4v though so just check for that.

I currently own a Denon and I absolutely love it! It sounds great and has plenty of power no matter which Denon model you choose. I may be a bit biased but if I were you I would pick a Denon.
