Well I am finding that a "decent" USB preamp will cost about half of what a refurbished "modern" laptop would cost - $80 to $100.

Maybe somebody else has a better recommendation?

Yes, I did. good memory.

A USB preamp would give you a proper line output that you can connect to an analog RCA input on the XMC-1 for using REW. Laptop headphone out isn't intended for that....
