I could swear this failed before. I think the remote wanted to communicate with the hub, and couldn't because the computer and the hub were on opposite sides of the house.

This sounds like something any universal remote...

This sounds like something any universal remote should be able to handle. If you wanted to get crazy with it, you could probably cook something up with a pulse-eight CEC adapter

I've used it with the Raspberry Pi and XBMC, worked really well right out of the box. I also have a couple of the pulse-eight USB adapters, works well on my Samsung TV and LG TV/Panasonic AVR setups

I wouldn't touch Silverlight with a 10-foot pole, so I can't really compare. The Roku streaming box works awesomely, so it CAN be done right. Microsoft just doesn't have the skills it seems.
