Want projector, not sure if feasible

I don't think you realize that your room isn't that far from 'ideal' for projection.

Controllable external light thanks to small (curtained) windows.
Reasonably dark colored walls and ceiling to...

Will do. Im horrified if this is normal for 1080 projectors... really is distracting and ruins intrascene contrast. Very surprised with the more modern discs if its not a fault with the unit.

As...

Indeed, I meant ensuring they're off since such features do sometimes introduce artifacting/noise... :)

Its possible. You moved from a 720p to 1080p projector so it's likely you weren't...

BenQ W1070 : DLP Full HD, 3D Ready with lens-shift for 1000$

Strange... Sounds like your fans are running slower than you're used to.

The soft whine after warm-up is probably the color wheel adjusting speed to your input source (50hz/60hz); but you're...

How does the sony vpl-hw10 compares to the benq w1070?

It does. But you said W700, not W7000 ;)

Just a typo, then! In which case the W1070 should still be a bit better. Though not by much.

Edit: looks like the W1070 is actually a 6x wheel...

The old W700 had a 3x wheel; the W1070 ups that to 5x; so while RBE might be slightly visible to those whom are sensitive, it should be much better than the W700. (The OP did mention RBE was no issue...

Optoma HD36

It's more of a first-look hands-on overview than a proper technical review (and I'm not wild about TDF reviews in general), but it's certainly quite positive:...

Optoma HD36

I've also been eyeing the HD36 with interest. On paper, it really looks like a winner, with the lamp and color-wheel combination looking like it might actually deliver on its brightness claim (and be...

Thinking of buying a Sony HW40ES

If you weren't happy with the PQ of the Sharp LCD, then you certainly won't be happy with the massive hit to both black levels and contrast that such bright walls/ceiling will cause as a result of...

Yeah, the black level request was why I initially mentioned the new Sony as well. As you say, the HW40 should more-or-less match the old 10 in terms of black levels whilst still offering notable...

I hear you; but remember that historically, DLP used to have an ANSI-Contrast advantage over both LCoS and LCD - and we're talking about an old LCoS unit here.

Today that's no longer the case at...

How does the sony vpl-hw10 compares to the benq w1070?

It was. And the HW10 does have a little under 500:1 in terms of contrast:

This was high back then:...

How does the sony vpl-hw10 compares to the benq w1070?

LCoS is arguably the best projection technology out there - but there's no stopping progress, and your unit is old.

Colors are good on the W1070, and its measured contrast will triple your old...

Optoma GT1080 vs BenQ W1080ST and W1085ST

Yikes ! Only 810 lumens ? Judder problems ? That is not a very favorable review at all.[/QUOTE]

It isn't, unfortunately. The scenario isn't much better with Optoma's latest longer-throw...

Is Epson going to be releasing a replacement for the 5030UB?

There isn't a scheduled replacement for the 5030 this time round. There're reports around here that it'll be getting a nice new firmware update, though, which will add extra image processing...

Projector run-time

I guess YMMV, but two lamp strikes in a day as per the OP's use-case (with an hour's use after the first strike and a few hours on the second) doesn't sound like a recipe for premature failure.

BenQ W1070 : DLP Full HD, 3D Ready with lens-shift for 1000$

Your projector is at a slight angle.

Any projector needs to be angled with its lens perfectly, perfectly perpendicular to the screen - at a dead-on right-angle - otherwise you get the geometry...

BenQ W1070 : DLP Full HD, 3D Ready with lens-shift for 1000$

Your initial understanding is correct: Ceiling mounting needs to be a few inches above the top of the screen.
Table mounting (which would have the projector not inverted) would require a few inches...
