You can still use the main HDMI(ARC) monitor out with non-ARC displays, although it is designed more for TVs while the 2nd main output is more suited for PJs as you have done.

Either way works fine, but many TVs only pass PCM 2.0 over HDMI(ARC) while DD 5.1 can pass over the optical audio out and is a more reliable connection as HDMI(ARC) doesn't always work.
