I also noticed that the TV did not acknowledge, with the display that includes battery level in the lower right, the Monoprice glasses. I suspect that the Monoprice glasses were "reverse engineered"...

I don't think anyone else can answer this question for you. The ST50 is a fine set, the VT50 is better. My preference is to buy the best I can afford. Your priorities may be different.

No go on the Monoprice glasses. While they do pair with the display and at first seem to work, you get the left eye frame only - the right eye shows blank.

I have the Redmere chip in my 30' cable - works fine. But if your existing cable is good quality, I wouldn't worry about it. That said, the Monoprice 30' cable with Redmere is less than $50.

You'll want to use ARC if you'll be using any of the TV's streaming apps. If your A/V receiver is doing the HDMI switching, then there's otherwise little point.
