The whole HDR display concept is relatively new, but the idea of putting 2 panels in a row (for increased contrast, not for HDR) has been around for a looong time. So any HDR related Dolby patents...

You can set the display calibration to "this display is already calibrated" to "DCI-P3" (or "BT.2020"), then madVR should output DCI-P3 (or BT.2020).

I can understand that DisplayCAL has separate tasks split into separate modules with limited communication flow between them. However, from a naive user point of view, when creating a 3dlut with a...

If the user creates a synthetic HDR destination profile then you already know everything you need to know, so you can write the 3dlut header correctly, without having to add a new user control. Or am...

I'm confused right now. I don't think we're on the same page.

Situation A):

The user does not have a meter. He has an HDR display, but the display's tone mapping sucks, so he wants madVR to...

That's true only for users who have a meter and actually profile their display.

Please also think about those users who use DisplayCAL to create a simple HDR processing 3dlut which doesn't involve...

For the madVR option "convert HDR content to SDR by using an external 3dlut", the 3DLUT must have "Input_Transfer_Function PQ" in the header, I think, but no "Output_Transfer_Function" specified, or...

Oh well, it's peak, but madVR is using some sort of rolling average over multiple frames to make sure the tone mapping curve doesn't jump up and down, because that would result in visible flickering....

With my Kaby Lake GPU with the Creator's Update, the OS media player does some rudimentary HDR - SDR conversion, which isn't really good quality (hue changes and luminance is clipped). The display...

Ooooooh, that would be pretty exciting! I would finally start buying UHD Blu-Ray discs then.

I'm kinda worried that studios might drop the format as a consequence, though, because it's still early...

For best image quality please always use RGB full range (0-255) output in the Nvidia GPU control panel. Then in madVR you can properly select between 0-255 and 16-255, and choose the matching setting...

Probably the video clock is too fast compared to the audio clock, so madVR has to repeat video frames once in a while to keep audio and video in sync. This problem can be solved either by using...

It might make sense to first experiment with a "simple" media player like MPC-HC, just to check if you can see a noticeable improvement in quality at all. If you can't (e.g. due to JVC not being 4K...

For 1080p Blu-Ray playback I'd recommend the following settings:

1) chroma upscaling (4:2:0 -> 4:4:4): "NGU Anti-Alias", medium quality.
2) image doubling (1080p -> 2160p): "NGU Standard" or "NGU...

FWIW, the only thing needed is a decent GPU (e.g. NVidia 1050 is a good bang-for-the-buck option for 1080p24 -> 4K upscaling). The rest of the HTPC can be old and slow. So if you just want to give it...

That's a nice one! I hope he doesn't put too much weight on the chroma frequency burst, though. Because the chroma upscaling algos which look best there (Sinc, or Lanczos with very high taps) are not...
