Yes, a "wired" connection is generally best for firmware updates, although not likely to get anymore on this unit. Otherwise, the PowerLine adapters have proven to work fairly reliably.

Although it has pre-amps, there is no "pre-amp" mode. The on board amps are always hot regardless of whether used or not.

Yes. No issue when playing different sources. :) The 4520CI has the added feature of using Zone 4 for the HDMI output, so you can still use Zones 2 and 3 for audio only if you prefer.
