Ok, I'm not saying that Windows 10 is a bad O/S, but it doesn't appeal to everyone. Most of the new features are gimmicks, and if you strip out things like Cortana, the 'new' Start Menu, virtual...

Win10 has one of the most intrusive anti-privacy policies in any software EVER released. MS have the ability to access/record/capture pretty much anything they want, and huge amounts of info are...

I still use a Radeon 7750 + MPC-HC + LAV + MadVR, and it works like a champ. Most of the time it's upscaling DVD rips and 720P movies to 1080P. My HTPC is actually connected to a Samsung UHD 4k TV,...

I'll keep everything local thanks. Too many risks/problems with keeping all that media in the cloud. Cost per TB on drives is still falling, and I don't think I could handle converting all my full HD...

Don't listen to MS. If you have a working system that does everything you need, then why upgrade? Most of the new features in Win10 are gimmicks, and easily available as 3rd party add-ons to Win7 if...

Seems like all you people are doing exactly what MS want - installing a new O/S that's actually far from ready for prime time, with many many bugs and security concerns. You're all beta testers now...

All the initial info from MS was (and still is) pretty confusing. The 'upgrade' is free for existing licensed 7/8/8.1 installations for at least 12 months. MS will continue to provide security...

Try reading the 12 pages of T&C's (most don't). I believe the key logging capability is still there. Win10 does collect far more info than any previous version, which is a concern. Checkout...

It is a scary thought, but quite the contrary. MS want Windows everywhere. They want people to be excited about Windows again. They want devs to flock to the new Universal App model. Windows 10 on...

Windows 10, by design, will be constantly changing now. This is what MS wants. They will be able to add/remove/change features at will with their rapid update cycle. While this maybe able to help...

Hate to say it, but Win10 is far from finished. It's still very rough around the edges in places, and probably needed another 6 months or so of tune'n'polish. Despite what MS claim about if being...

All I can suggest is, if you only have optical to your receiver, and a 2.0 speaker setup at the moment, when you re-encode, just encode the 5.1/7.1 HD track to 5.1 AAC. When you play through your 2.0...

You can't 'upgrade' a server O/S to a desktop O/S. Not possible. You're only upgrade option will be to Windows Server 2016 when that's ready - and that probably won't be free.

I'm assuming anyone here signing up to the free upgrade is not doing so on boxes you need to keep WMC on?

I tried setting my HTPC resolution to 4k on my UHD TV. Not a good experience. I set it back to 1080P and let the TV upscale to 4k. Looks pretty awesome. Happy with that.

Plex is good (I use for it for the kids movies with Roku clients), but for real next generation stuff check out Emby (formerly Media Browser - MB - get it?). This is where it's all at for me now....

Did everyone like 'Kodi' when XBMC changed there name? Probably not. Emby (as in M B) is actually pretty catchy. MB has grown so much since just being a media browsing/playback tool, it was time for...

It's personal taste at the end of the day. In your opinion, the Start Menu was out of date, and very '90s'. Not to me though. I use it all the time, and find it far easier and more logical. Microsoft...

I don't think many here will be going from 7 to 10 is there's no Media Center option anymore, and as time goes on, that certainly looks to be the case. No MC, no Windows 10. Simple, at least for as...

Stablebit for me. Been rock steady since I started using it. I don't think the WHS2011 version is getting much love by the developers at the moment, but it still does exactly what it's meant to do.

Windows/WMC @ 4k

I may be upgrading to a 4k TV (currently have a 1080P one).

I've always run Windows/MC at 1080P, and it's worked fine for everything I've thrown at it. If I upgrade to 4k, is it worth running...

Windows 10 Universal Media Center app

Just imagine for a second if MS decided to create a new Windows 'Universal' Media Center app! It runs on Windows 10, Xbox 1, Surface and WP. It supports BDA tuners (if they're available for live TV),...

While it's nice to see the CODEC support built in, I agree with stranger89, it's certainly not a game changer. MS don't see HTPC's as a market any more. If they did, they'd still not only include...
