Damage would occur if you hear prolonged distortion from the speakers .. which in that case .. simply lower the volume. :)

Check all speaker wires are correctly placed. It's also possible there is a short in one of the speakers which you would test by connecting one speaker at a time and see if the unit still heats...

Try doing a soft reset by simply unplugging the power cord for 10 minutes. If still no joy, then reset the microprocessor (p. 148 Owner's manual).
