I peeled the black mat face a bit and it's very porous and reminds me of a lot of house wrap, so I assume that would be fine facing outwards? It's just nicer with the black facing out.

Yes we did a test run on construction paper first and then just started small in the corner. We liked it so much we expanded it and it quickly became the feature of the ceiling.

Yeah I figured firing right into the soffit tray was a bad idea.
The soffit tray is 1' below the speakers.

Here's an actual photo of the Del Sur - Stargazing sample I have. The photos make it look more charcoal grey because of how the light reflects but it is really more black with a charcoal pattern.
