We'll likely see these before too long, but agreed, if you want a solid, dedicated home theater box, get a NUC or Chromebox, and for full 3D, Mede8er X3D series.

They're both media players, with different capabilities. With the newer HDHomeRun (w/H.264), you can use a Roku channel for it to view live TV. It takes MPEG2 streams and transcodes them to H.264.

They can send core (to an AVR) or downmix to 2.0 (if just connected directly to a TV). But, a few upcoming Android boxes (like OpenHour) claim hd audio passthrough capability.

It's odd as as far as their proclaimed partnership with XBMC goes as a couple of XBMC devs are saying they're unaware of any partnership with RockChip or Cloud Media. Guess we'll find out what's what.

I don't see why not. I expect Tablo's HLS mp4's and similar to Simple.tv's. Drop into VideoRedo and save as H.264 ts. It should save without re-encoding.

Hmm, no, haven't done anything special. Disabling 'Mediacodec' under video acceleration in XBMC may help with playback. Never had the cache full issues you mention though.
