This crossover design has very little baffle step compensation, I believe this is why you found the midbass a little lacking. As you found a little EQ is an easy fix for that.

No issues covering the crossover with polyfil, the hf padding is very efficient so those resistors should only get warm to the touch when sending a couple hundred watts into the speaker.
