It's hard to say without being there, but it sounds like the problem is at the source, not in the player. You can try doing a full reset of the player and select the option to remove all accounts.

If it shows PCM, then that's what it is receiving from the source device. You can also use the info button to toggle what's displayed on the front panel.

Nobody else has mentioned: if you bypass the AVR you can't see the AVR's on-screen menus. That's a deal breaker for me. But there's absolutely no technical reason to bypass the AVR if it correctly...
