Although you can get an HTPC to play physical media, it simply isn't worth the time, effort, and expense.

Right, and it goes back to the separate OS and data drives. Lose the OpenELEC boot drive, and it takes all of 10-15 min tops to set it back up, if that long. It's a really great solution.
