I don't see how this problem could be related to BD Live, as the 1st T2 disc doesn't have it. Pretty sure BD Live discs didn't start showing up until late 2008 or so.

You don't compensate for NTSC-J by turning down the brightness, you turn it up. The IRE in NTSC-J is lower than standard NTSC, not higher. And I was talking about US releases of anime, not Japanese...

I used a PS2 for the CD update back when I had a 605, so you don't necessarily need a CD player. Probably any DVD or BD player that can output at 44.1kHz will work, too.
