IMO, the preamp makes a bigger difference than the amp. I would bet you'd get a bigger improvement going to separates with a nice preamp than just adding an amp.

Haven't had a land line in years.

I'd cut the cord in a second if I could get ESPN some other way. Since I can't, I pay for directv year round when I only really watch it come football season.

Definitely sounds like an issue with the receiver though I have an X4000 and am not having any issues with the X1 hooked up to it or any of the other sources either.
