Technically AAC can be passed over S/PDIF but I've never found a way to do it from a PC (or from any other device in North America), unfortunately. Most Japanese-make receivers can decode it as well...

True but if he's just using it for keyboard, mouse, and IR receiver, then it will work perfectly fine as those things don't need more than 1.1 speeds anyway.
