Neither of those make a lot of sense to me but if he likes the sound where it is and it's within the trim range of the AVR it doesn't really matter.

Given the AVR is setting the trims on the low side you should be able to turn the sub's gain down a few notches and re-cal the AVR so it is nearer 0 dB.

IME the main reason a good sub does not sound as loud is because the harmonic distortion is lower. The second harmonic of a 50 - 60 Hz tone is 100 - 120 Hz and to many that sounds like "real bass"....

Uh, adjusting the input voltage to the amp does adjust the volume, and the gain, output relative to input... It sounds like the Hsu did not use an audio or log taper potentiometer for gain/volume...

Transformer hum (mechanical, not ground loops) can occur for a number of reasons so the CMX-2 may or may not help. Probably won't hurt anything so you could give it a try.

You are right that additional circuits increase the potential for ground loops. But, it is much harder to add a circuit later after everything is finished, and this way you have the circuits in place...

Sorry Jerry. Many DMMs, especially the inexpensive ones, target measuring the AC voltage from your wall or a transformer and only have about 100 Hz bandwidth. Try to measure a 1 kHz (or even 300 Hz)...
